Flaming Heart Tattoo Inspired Jewelry – Polymer Clay Cane Designs
Popular Tattoo Artwork Does Not Always Have To Be Etched Right Into Your Skin:
I've never had a real tattoo. But that doesn't mean I can't still have fun with real tattoo designs. Actually, you could probably create a whole niche business selling tattoo inspired pendants, necklaces, bracelets, brooches and earrings to customers who want to match the jewelery they wear with their body tattoos.
Over the last week or so, I have been preparing for an upcoming craft fair and jewelry show. During the process of tagging and packing up my inventory, I've also been taking photos of everything.
The flaming heart tattoo design pictured above, was made with a polymer clay cane I designed earlier this summer after seeing some tattoo inspired clothing. It definitely appeals to a different type of customer than some of my other jewelry does… like this polymer clay rose necklace or this cane design silver spoon pendant.
Tatoo art tends to appeal to a younger crowd than I typically market to. But this is gift giving season. And everyone seems to have at least one present they need to buy for a teenager or college kid. So it's always best to be as prepared as possible for any craft, jewelry and gift show you are planning to sell at.
Are tattoo inspired jewelry designs of interest to you? Would you like to learn how to make tattoo designed polymer clay canes? Or do you think the world would be a better place without more of this kind of fashion?! I'd love to hear your opinion on this!

Although I don't have any tattoos myself, I think that they are (usually) very creative and imaginative! I've even thought that I might like to design some tattoos myself one day. One of my GROWN daughters wants me to draw a chain of daisies so that she can put them as a tattoo on her ankle to symbolize her love for her dog named Daisy. I will probably draw it for her, although I am not quite sure of how I feel about tattoos since they are so permanent. Hey! Maybe if I made a piece of jewelry from a daisy cane, she would use that around her ankle instead of a tattoo!?! She would probably still want the tattoo, I am thinking. Oh well.
Anyway, YES I would love to learn to make canes from tattoo designs!!!

Hello Cindy,
I have several friends that have actual tattoos imprinted on their skin. Now they are small and in good taste, and they really love them. They showed me web sites online that display tattoo artwork. You are right, there really are some great ideas that could be used for our polymer clay. Thanks for reminding me.

I've never thought of using tatoos before, great idea…..I have used coloring books…..They're pretty much the same thing! Thanks for sharing this, it helps to have new avenues to look at! My muse is temporialy hiding!

@Debbie: There really are some cool ones aren't there?! Some are so detailed that they would be pretty tricky to duplicate in clay, but some are pretty straightforward like this flaming heart that aren't too bad. Let me know if you come across any cool tattoo designs that would be great for clay!

I love the idea!
I have two tattoos myself, in black and white, very simple. I have a beetle on my lower back and a sun on the back of my shouder. I'd quite like another one, something music related.
My friend Kirsty has an awesome one, it's a sort of organic flowing tree-like shape with branches which pretty much covers the whole of her back, and it's made up of tiny musical notes in green ink.
Can't say I'm a big fan of the cartoon characters and such though, I prefer stuff that looks more like, I don't know, modern graphic art.

Thanks Silverleaf! I was wondering if people who had tattoos would like this idea. Glad you do! You could even copy your own if you wanted. That could be cool! You could then give some to your family, friends, love as a reminder of you! :-)

I love this idea! I've always wanted a tattoo but my DH doesn't agree and my wonderful marriage is more important!! I have friends and relatives with tattoos though and am intrigued by the thought of tattoo inspired jewelry!
