Life here on this planet with all its complicated twists and turns, ups and downs, joys and sorrows… has an incredible simplicity, when it comes right down to it. A new life is born, flourishes and fades away… only for new life to spring forth again in its place.

As many of you already know from last week’s Brandy Rose Color post, Doug’s dad had terminal cancer. Now as a family, we are faced with the sad process of having to let him move on from his life here on earth.

On Thursday, May 17th Erv passed away, with his wife Harriet, son Doug, myself and his grandchildren Willow and Fisher by his side. It was a loving and peaceful experience, the kind that changes your life forever.

Erv died in the same hospital his Daughter Heidi and his Grandson Fisher were born. This very building holds great joy and great sorrow… for not just our family but for many families, as that is the nature of life. A never ending circle of birth, growth and death. A journey that starts simply and finishes simply. And hopefully was filled with a lot of loving memories in between.

The Fresh Spring Grass in the photo Willow took this Spring, as the new shoots broke through the ground and before the first mow, is the perfect example of how the Earth renews itself. Today, I see this grass as a symbol of all that is pure and good about life. The Winter was cold and wet and the grass held no signs of life. But the Earth eventually warmed, the sky cleared and new growth emerged from the soil, ready to begin all over again.

Our hearts are tender right now. But deep inside is our fresh spring grass, waiting to flourish and grow and feel happy again. We love you Erv. You’ve gone to a better place now. The sky is clearing, the air is warming and the grass is starting to grow. Before you know it, you’ll need to get out there and start mowing that lawn… the grass ain’t gonna mow itself, you know! :)

This Spring Grass photo is the inspiration for our next B-Series Recipe Palette. Everyone who is subscribed to my Polymer Clay Guest List will be able to download the recipes free, one per week on Friday mornings during the month of June 2012.

  • Fresh Spring Grass (Recipe 049-1B)
  • Golf Greens (Recipe 049-2B)
  • Blue Grass (Recipe 049-3B)
  • New Shoot (Recipe 049-4B)

[wp_ad_camp_1]

Fresh Green Grass is the main green color of the grass as it reaches for the warm sun. Golf greens is the deeper shade of green, found in the low lights of each blade. Blue Grass is the blue tint of the sunlight as it warms the blades of the grass. And New Shoot is the lightest and brightest shade of pale green found along the very tips of each new shoot as it emerges from the soil.

The recipes described above are from the Volume-049 B-Series Palette. They are free to download for everyone subscribed to my Polymer Clay Guest List, Friday Email Newsletter.

I am so sorry for your loss.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there. I do not sleep:
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
    Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.

    Mary Elizabeth Frye.

Cindy, thank you so much for sharing this beautiful reflection with all of us. Yes, these truths have been since time began, and will continue long after we are gone from the sight of others. The inexorable rhythms of the natural world can be such a balm if we allow them. I was so thrilled this morning to see these lovely greens; I believe it is the first all-green palette you have shared here. You have taught me to appreciate the rainbow of colours, but I have to confess… the greens of our vegetable garden always were, and remain, my favorites. God bless xoxo

  5. pollyanna, 21 May, 2012

Another favorite color palette. So soothing….

A very lovely color palette of greens which certainly amplifys this earth we all share. A wonderful expression of remembrance to someone who was part of your life. Thank you Cindy.
Anna, this poem is so heart warming, thanks so much for sharing.

Cindy, you and your family are such beautiful and loving souls, and I am sure “Grandpa Erv” felt blessed for having you in his life. I know he is still with you, as my parents are, and someday you will be reunited with him. For now, I believe he is watching over you and his pride in you will continue always. Love M.

  9. Catalina, 21 May, 2012

May God’s newest Angel help you heal during this difficult time. Condolences to you and your family.
Willow did a nice job on the photo. A breath of fresh air.

Cindy, you are so blessed to have witnessed his peaceful passing. I lost my mother to cancer unexpectedly. I wasn’t able to be by her side when they tried to revive her. i was in Chicago and had to hear the doctors on the phone performing CPR on her. I wish I could have been there to share in her passing to the next life. Death is a chance at renewal as Deepak Chopra says.
Peace and good thoughts to you.

Greens, how I used to hate them when dished up at dinner time, isn’t it funny as now I cannot get enough of them.
I have been busy making miniature cabbages and cauliflowers for a dolls house project and went out to buy these veggies so I could study them. Wow have you taken a good look at the leaves, it took some experimenting and mixing to come up with about 5 different shades.
    of green

I should have waited for Cindy as the new pallette was just what I needed. Thanks Cindy.

I always think that green is such a restful colour, in fact it is my choice (when I next get paint) for a bed room make-over with loads of white.

Years ago I used to read a story to my llitle brother, called

“The Elf that Didn’t know His Colours.”

It was a sad little tale as the elf was not allowed to go out with all the other elves to paint the flowers their different colours. He had to sit in the classroom to learn what colour to use for each flower. He sat and tried but just couldn’t get it into his head. So every day he was stuck in the classroom trying to remember his lessons while the other elves merrily skipped out doors with their lovely colours to paint the petals
(At about this part of the story my little brother was usually in tears) he’s such a sensitive soul !

Anyway the little elf picked up his painbrush to colour in his drawing and painted it in different shades of green (his favourite)
When he had finished he took it to his teacher for marking. “Thats a nice clean picture” she said “Well done” He walked back to his desk happy that teacher had liked his CLEAN painting. He had not gone over the edges or made any dirty sploges!!
Just then the school inspector walked in, strod over to our elf and said. “What colour is that?”

“Please Sir it’s CLEAN” whispered the elf remembering what his teacher had said. Luckily the inspector was a little hard of hearing and thought the little elf had said …GREEN… not clean!

GREEN……………..The happy ending was that the elf was allowed out with his pots of different shades of green with instructions to paint the leaves, grass, and all other green stuff. He happily painted the rows of cabbages, tops of the leeks and lettuces in the vegetable plot. Then off to the big old Fir tree with the darker shades.

To this day he is out every day with his list of plants and his pots of paint, and doesn’t he do a good job………My brother still tells this story to his grandchildren who sit with tears in their eyes when he get to the sad parts.

We all need to accept the sad times in our lives, but just like April showers, the sunshine of happiness will eventually shine through. Weep your tears, but be happy in the knowledge that Erv will probably be out there one day painting the petals of his favourite roses….now that,s a beautiful though to hold onto…………………………………..cheers xx …………………………..

  12. Cherie, 22 May, 2012

Thanks for sharing that lovely story.

  13. Monique U, 22 May, 2012

Elaine, what a lovely story you have shared! I have never heard that one… and I would be happy to be that little elf, whistling along as I placed each pretty shade of green just where it needed to be. As you know, Green does not wish to be front and center, but loves to hide behind the louder colours and OBSERVE!

  14. Elaine Faulks, 22 May, 2012

Mmm Monique, sounds a little like me!
I have certainly been observing Willows beautiful close up shots since I got the Wilton cutting set (as suggested by Cindy) Also looking through my flower encyclopedia at all the stunning green blossoms and plants. Must order some more wasabi green and try my hand at a pale green orchid, the one with deep red wine throat and spots.
    Glad you liked the story.

I am so sorry for your loss. Erv will not suffer any more.

    Cindy, Doug and Family:
I have been still and quiet here, mourning the loss of the last Elders on my Father’s Side-his youngest Sister to be exact. She was 90, lived a wonderful exciting life and one of my favorite people. I have not been online much, but when I do come here – I find that you are experiencing the same sweet sorrow. The passing of someone so close and dear. Doug and all – my personal wishes for an easy transition.
Your Dad sounds like a wonderful person from what I read. You have all been very lucky to share all of these memories together.
I find in my quiet moments that I have wanted to take my camera and wander around-see things through a peaceful natural eye. I have taken lots of animal and flower shots. It makes my soul and heart feel at rest.
My best to your family. Pauline

So very sorry for your loss to you and your entire family…how beautiful and eloquent your posts have been on the life and passing of your beloved father in law. Thank you for sharing this journey with us Your posts remind me of my favorite poem on grief I would like to share with you all:

    Grief never ends,
    But it changes.
    It’s a passage,
    not a place to stay.

    the sense of loss
    Must give way
    If we’re to value
    The life that was lived.

Grief is not a sign of weakness,
    Nor lack of faith,
it is the price of love.

Just love this…you all are in my heart, my thoughts and prayers! xoxoxo

    Laura

  21. Paige F, 24 May, 2012

Hi thanks for sharing that lovely poem. I am going to keep the part that greif is the price of love. I have a friend that is eighty one years old and I am twenty four. Even with the huge age gap we managed to hit it off from the first time we met. I often think about how one day soon it will be her time to go and that I will be heart broken that I did not get to know her longer. I can think about this poem and know that it is okay to greive when her time comes( hopefully not for a long time) and that I know that I love her and that is the price. She is the sweetest lady and still works for a church in childcare.

  22. Monique U, 23 May, 2012

Laura, what a touching poem… so simply stated, easy to relate to by any of us who have suffered the loss of a dear friend or family member. The price of loving another soul… indeed! Do you recall the author of this piece?

  23. Cindy Lietz, 23 May, 2012

Thank you all so much for your heartfelt support and love. It really amazes me how sweet and kind you all are to us. Without ever having met each other in person, we are truly dear old friends. One day I hope to meet each and every one of you and give you a hug for all that you have given us. We are truly blessed that our paths have crossed.

  24. Doug Lietz and Family, 23 May, 2012

Yes… it has been a such a blessing to have all of you guys offering support and encouragement… in general… but especially over the last couple of weeks during my Dad’s final days. Thank you for posting your stories and poems here at the blog. Now they will always be here when we want to come back to revisit and remember.

This whole experience has caused Cindy and I to do some deep thinking about priorities in our life… you know those things that people like Stephen Covey define as ‘Important’ but not necessarily ‘Urgent’.

In Cindy’s comment just above, she alluded to a goal that we had set back in January, about wanting to make 2012 the year that we start to get out on the road to meet up with as many of you as possible… in person.

Well things are moving forward on that front. We just purchased a travel trailer that will officially mark the beginning of our PCTroadTrip Adventure. The whole family is “onboard” with the idea (including Willow and Fisher)… so you’ll definitely be hearing more about this new and exciting project over the coming months.

In a way, it will be part of a tribute that we can give to my Dad. Before he left us, we did have the opportunity tell him about this dream of ours… and although he had already lost his ability to communicate in words, I will never forget how his eyes lit up with joy and excitement and approval. It was a sign that we were on the right track.

  25. Joyce Folsom, 23 May, 2012

What an awesome idea, Doug. Something for all of us to look forward to and maybe a dream come true. Health issues are up and down for us but we did manage to fly from St. Petersburg, FL to Omaha, NE for a wedding. Flying on Friday and returning on Sunday. That wedding will always bring back so many memories. Something that we didn’t think possible at times but with a lot of effort it worked on May 11 – 13. We praise the Skye Caps at the airports and the stewardesses who’s services were perfection and made it all possible. Looking forward to hearing more as your plans unfold. The best to all.

  26. Jocelyn, 08 June, 2012

You all are going to have a blast, I do so envy you…..

  27. Marlene C, 23 May, 2012

Florida is a great place to visit (hint, hint) and even though it is a REAL trip from home, summer vacation for the kids, is a couple of months long, isn’t it????

  28. Ken Hamilton, 24 May, 2012

So sorry to hear of your loss, a huge canyon has been torn in your lives that can never be totally filled, but have faith that time WILL fill most of it with the memories of all that was good and best of the memories you have, I still, some twelve years after my grandmothers passing get sandbagged by something, a song on the radio, a fragrence on the breeze, a forgotten photo in a drawer, and I start crying all over again (I’m getting teary as I type this) only to remember something and then start laughing. It may seem like nothing will help right now, but time DOES heal.

  29. Paige F, 24 May, 2012

I am so sorry to hear about you and your families loss. I want you to know my prayers are with you.

  30. DJ, 27 May, 2012

Oh I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of your father. It was positive that you were able to comfort him and offer him support during his final moments. I hope with time, all your wonderful memories will give you strength and inspiration. Please take care Cindy, Doug and all of your families.

  31. Linda K., 29 May, 2012

I’ve been away from the group for awhile so I wasn’t aware of Doug’s father’s illness. I am so sorry for all of your family that you have lost someone you loved so much. I hope that the many prayers you are receiving from the members of this wonderful group are helping to ease your pain.
