Today’s post is for all the Kato Clay people who read this blog. Sue Fisher, a valued member from Australia, has graciously submitted another one of her original Kato Polyclay color palettes. She calls this one, Bouquet of Violets. There is also an index at the end of the article with links to even more of Sue’s ongoing Kato color series.
Here’s another original Kato colour palette for you. As before, there are three ordinary colours and two metallic/pearlised colours. I call this palette Bouquet of Violets (and yes, I’m definitely in denial about it heading towards winter here in the southern hemisphere!).

I was struck with inspiration (always a good thing) after a color trends presentation by Pittsburgh Paints during commercial design (not such a good thing) and decided this summer that I would mix colors from their palettes (50+ of 6? colors each) and make some pieces to go with each palette. I fully intend to post the palettes to my blog (maybe I’ll use it more) as I go along. After I run out of their palettes, I’ll have to go find some from some other company (Although, I do have a book of paint samples… perks of being an interior design major.) If anyone is interested in the color recipes, let me know. I’ll probably start posting them in late May.
@Katie: What brand(s) of clay will you use?

@Katie: I’m interested! I’d love to check out your color recipes! I went to your etsy shop, and loved it! I love your Viking knit pieces, too. I’ve made jewelry using just about every technique there is (that doesn’t require a torch.) But I’ve haven’t gotten around to Viking knit, though I’ve wanted to. I don’t have a draw plate. I guess I could make one myself, though. What do you use?
@Phaedrakat: If you want a really good maple draw plate to to lordstreasures.com and type draw plate into the search field. These were made by my late husband once I got into teaching spool knitting. I also have spools.
I’m just getting into working with Kato – the only brand allowed for Fire Mountain Gems contests – so I REALLY appreciate your recipes!

@Joyce M: Joyce, there’s no ‘outside’ voting on any of the contests that I am entering. Thanks for thinking of that thought. I sure appreciate the support. I’ve made the finals a few times with FMG for my wire art. This will be my first attempt at entering with clay. I have some very grandiose ideas … just don’t know how they will work out. I’ll also enter some ‘simpler’ designs, just to keep my bases covered. There is a small stipend even for making the finals and every little bit helps to support my wire and clay habits!
Sue thank you once again for sharing with us. I use Kato for my canes. Haven’t found a bar I couldn’t condition yet. Kato just requires a little more TLC than the others I have found. I haven’t come across the new Kato yet either has anyone else and if so do you have an opinion on it??

@Katie: I’d be interested; experimenting with colours is fun, and it’s always good to see how other people approach them compared to yourself.
@Peggy Barnes: I’ve used the new Kato a bit. Bearing in mind that I personally find the “old” Kato formula perfect and didn’t want it to be any softer at all, I was pleasantly surprised. That is, I expected to hate it but I didn’t, and even though I definitely prefer the old formula myself I’m quite certain that most people will prefer the new formula. It’s much easier to condition — startlingly so — and it manages that without becoming over-soft when it’s worked a lot, and without being “fingerprinty” or more prone to air bubbles. It is softer than “old” Kato so I’m still going to buy the old formula for as long as I can… but at least I’m not going to have to give up polymer clay because my favourite brand has gone too soft! ;)

@Sue F: Sue, thank you so much for another colour conversion to Kato. I especially like the Jacaranda, a glorious colour, my favourite large tree in all the world – November in Sydney is jacaranda High Season. Because it’s warmer here than in Sydney jacarandas are still in bloom in places – late for last Nov. or early for next Nov? Anyway, they’re blooming here & there. Ever been to Grafton for the Jacaranda Festival? Now that’s something to see.
@Mary: You’re welcome! But no, I haven’t been to Grafton for the Jacaranda Festival: the only occasions I’ve been there, I’ve been on my way to some place else and just passing through. I imagine it would be quite spectacular, however, judging by how showy plain old jacarandah-lined suburban streets can be when they’re in full flower.
