I love helping the kids come up with costumes. The photo is of my son Fisher in his Mad Scientist Costume!! Great hair eh? It’s a little like his mama’s doo in this shot: The Polymer Clay Tutor’s Evil Plan

For me there is nothing better than a homemade costume at Halloween. When I was a kid we would dig through some old clothes and become Old Ladies, Hobos, Pirates, whatever seemed fun. And we would head out with Dad while Mom stayed home handing out candy.

Things were simple then. A sheet with holes for a ghost was good enough. But it also seemed that it was a more creative time. For me, even to this day, buying a costume off the rack does not seem very fun. And forget about the same costume year after year… I couldn’t do it. And neither could my kids.

Luckily handmade costumes are pretty easy for us to come up with. Never have to pay a dime for them either, because we probably have the best dress up trunk North of Hollywood!

It started back in the 80’s. I was a teenager then and most of our regular clothes were costume worthy! ;-) Back then, with the money I made at my part time job, I bought myself an old trunk to put my keepsakes in. Some of my more favorite clothes went into the trunk, along with a couple of items mom and dad had saved from when they were younger.

As you can imagine, being the 80’s meant there were some pretty interesting items in that trunk. A white satin jacket with red and white elastic… A jean jacket with shoulder pads and mirrors on it… Purple, red and green plaid wool stirrup pants… Rainbow ‘Mork from Ork’ suspenders… and of course, leg warmers in a couple of different color combinations!

After my husband and I got married, Doug bought me an even larger ‘circus trunk’, that stood up on end and opened up with clothes racks and drawers. I started to put anything and everything that would be fun to save for a costume someday. Belts, hats, jewelry, clothes, shoes, scarves, etc.

Friends and family started adding to it, with old accessories and costumes they were getting rid of. And to this day the collection is just getting bigger all the time.

However, because of everything going on with the recent launch of the Polymer Clay Members Library, we didn’t go to the family Halloween dance at the kids school this year. So Doug and I didn’t get a chance to dress up. But the kids are having parties at school today and we will all go Trick or Treating tonight.

You can see by the photo, Fisher is ready to go in his Mad Scientist Costume. Our daughter Willow is ready too… with her Killer Bee Outfit… complete with yellow and black horizontal stripes, black witch style hair, army boots, a utility belt, sunglasses and black lace gloves.

Hope you all have a fun and safe Halloween with your families. And don’t eat too much of your candy all at once!

Do you have any fun family Halloween stories to share?
