Polymer Clay Zinnia Flower Cane Mini Tutorial

Zinnia Flower Cane Pendant - Polymer Clay TutorVideo #749: Chrysanthemum Cane… kicked up a notch… using a shifted color blend, metallic accent and an easy feathering technique.

In today’s video I was going to show you how to make the classic polymer clay flower cane called the Chrysanthemum Cane… but everyone makes that! So I decided to ‘kick it up a notch’ and update this flower cane with a color shifted teardrop blend, a metallic accent and some extra feathering, all while keeping things simple and relaxed!

This is kind of a long video, but since I know that many of you are craving a new tutorial from me, I thought I could give a great little mini lesson that should keep those creative juices flowing for a bit until we can get ‘back to normal’… as if the word ‘normal’ could ever be applied to us ;)

Any who… as you will see in today’s video, the cane is simple and relaxed (and at times even looks like a ‘hot mess’) but it magically pulls together into a wonderfully delicate and pretty flower cane that I am sure you will be as delighted by as I was when I cut into this cane for the first time.

All you will need is some Premo Fuchsia, Orange, Cadmium Yellow, 18K Gold Premo Accents, a pasta machine or clay roller, an old gift card and a clay blade.

Happy claying!

    Hi Cindy,

Lovely cane, red usually isn’t my colour but the colour mix here is great, think it would also look good with a blue/greenish theme and a purple/lilac theme. Never heard of a Zinnia flower before today.
    Thanks.

  2. Cindy Lietz, 29 August, 2016

Thank you Marie! I take it that the Zinnia isn’t in the UK then? I believe it is a plant that originates from Mexico. They are an annual that goes quite easily in warm weather so they are quite common in planter boxes around here in the summer. They are lot like a Chrysanthemum, only they tend to be brightly colored. That is why I chose it for the name of my cane.

  3. Dawn B, 29 August, 2016

Very pretty. This is going to be fun to try. I love canes, especially the “forgiving” flower canes. Thanks Cindy!

  4. Cindy Lietz, 30 August, 2016

Thanks Dawn! Let us know if you try it out!

  5. Anna Sabina, 29 August, 2016

I love Zinnas, they are usually easy to grow and they have those large bright flower heads. Great for cut flowers too. This would be a pretty flower cane no matter the colors. Thanks Cindy for another great tut.

  6. Cindy Lietz, 30 August, 2016

You are welcome Anna! You are right, it would be a pretty cane even if they were in non-zinnia colors.

  7. Catalina, 30 August, 2016

This so pretty! I think I will try this today! And like what Marie stated, the blues and purples will be very cool! Thanks for another cool technique!

  8. Cindy Lietz, 30 August, 2016

You’re welcome Catalina! Do take pictures if you end up making this cane in different colors as well. I would love ot see how it turns out!

  9. Marion Rayner, 30 August, 2016

    Hi Cindy
How wonderful to have another tutorial from you! I was so excited when I saw it, just like the old days! These colours are gorgeous, there may be other shades but I really like the ones you’ve chosen. This would look great for almost anything, book covers, place mats, light switch covers and of course jewellery.
    Thank you so much!

  10. Cindy Lietz, 30 August, 2016

Yes I agree Marion that this cane would be a good one to use in all kinds of different decor items as well. Do take pics if you turn this into a project. I would love to see!

  11. Serena Z, 31 August, 2016

Hi! I’m from Uruguay, and I love your videos. Thanks for your work. I have a question, How can I make this shiny surface? I’m sorry about my english!! Thanks!!

  12. Cindy Lietz, 05 September, 2016

Hi Serena, I use UV resin. Just do a search for it in the search box and you will find the info you need.

  13. Julia G, 31 August, 2016

What a lovely project to find on the last day of August! Colourful and summery that will remind me that summer isn’t really over quite yet. I LOVE canes, and look forward to experimenting with other colours of this one. Thank you, Cindy for making me itch to get back to my table!

  14. Cindy Lietz, 05 September, 2016

Thank you Julia! Happy to scratch your itch! :)

  15. Lynn Campbell Behnke, 02 September, 2016

    Dear Cindy,
I tried this right away in the colors you showed, and in purple, blue, and green with silver. I accidentally rolled the pink one too flat and it turned into this gorgeous pattern with a sort of Indian look. They are so pretty and were so easy. I already have items ready to sell at the Market tomorrow. More projects like this, please! Thanks.
    Lynn

  16. Cindy Lietz, 05 September, 2016

How wonderful Lynn! How awsome to hear that even your ‘mistake’ turned out so great. That goes to show you there aren’t really any mistakes in polymer clay… just new discoveries!

  17. Nancy H, 02 September, 2016

    Hey, Cindy,
Another great video as always! What resin do you use?
Thanks so much for your guidance :)

  18. Cindy Lietz, 05 September, 2016

I used UltraDome UV Resin. Just do a search on it at the top of the page and you’ll find more info on it.

  19. Carol Paull, 03 September, 2016

Hi Cindy, I enjoyed your video and will try it soon. I am a newbe – I haven’t started yet:-), but you inspired me to try. I live in Australia. Thank you, Carol

  20. Cindy Lietz, 05 September, 2016

Just go for it Carol! There’s no point in holding back. Even if it doesn’t work out you can mush it up and get a whole new color to work with. Have fun!
