In the library this week is another pretty flower cane tutorial, to add to your collection. What is interesting about this particular cane, is all of the pattern variations that can result depending on:
(1) How you put together your color blends;
(2) The type of the clay you use; and
(3) How you end up forming the petals.
But no matter the outcome, they almost always end up looking pretty.
It’s amazing just how many different patterns can come from one cane. Of course you have to have a knack for that kind of ideas to come from your head. Cindy is full of all those wonderful ideas, and so many people have learned from her and her videos. She teaches in a way that is easy to understand and relaxed. ~Lynn-W

Breathtaking!!!! Those beads from that cane are just beautiful. I hope I’ll be able to make it. Thank you for the quick reply. I’ll try Home Depot again and see what I can find. I just put everything together to make the Dogwood Cane. I watch the video and write what I need to do. Does anyone have other ways to remember the directions? I feel like I’m very disorganized. I’m not too computer saavy, either. I know there must be a way to get organized there. I love being able to get help so fast and from so many people Thanks everyone for all the great ideas.

@Helen: Why don’t you set up a little station near your computer so you can watch and work at the same time. You only need a space the size of a TV Table to work on. That might help.
Thank you Cindy!!! That was a great idea.Setting up by the computer would be great for me but not for my husband. He doesn’t even like the notes about clay that I leave near the computer. Looks good, can’t wait. I have to confess that in moving along in my development I have purchased some canes from polymer clay cane sources to experiment with different techniques. My time is definitely worth the few dollars I have paid for a cane.
I do want to create my own for my future projects, but until the time when I can make one that looks like what I intended, others will profit from my inexperience.
That being said – your lessons will certainly provide me with the foundations for my development.

@Helen: Maybe if you made a clay station on wheels that you could roll back out of the office when you were done, could work for you and your husband? Glad to hear you found the wire. Cheapest and easiest resource for wire that I’ve found so far.
@Doug: Lots of people buy canes. (That’s why there is a market for selling them.) I think you will enjoy the video. It should help you on your way to making your own canes!
Cindy, another great idea!!!! My husband didn’t like that idea either. I’ll think of something. Michaels had a sale on Premo this week so I went to get cadmium yellow for my Dogwood cane. They had everything BUT cadmium yellow. Well I’m all stocked up on Premo, now, and because they didn’t have the yellow, I went to Joann’s. Great day today!!!!! I got the yellow and Studio By Sculpy tools with my coupon.

Helen, I have the same problem as you. I watch the video a couple times write down what I think I need help with then go off to my craft room and then have to go back to computer and watch again a lot of the time. I have been hinting to my husband about the dream machine for awhile on how a wonderful Christmas present it would make. As much as I would like to have one I am now asking for a lap top so I can take it out to my room and watch as I go just like Cindy suggested. I have a beautiful room my husband made me out of his side of the garage. He has a separate 2 car garage where he works on his hobbys. I can’t wait, having a computer right there to watch and work at the same time will be so nice. Maybe the dream machine next year. Hopefully the prices will come down a little also.
Love your video Cindy can’t wait to try it out. You are the best! Just had an idea haven’t had time to think on it because I really mean I just now wondered if it would help if I recorded Cindy’s voice then listened to it as I worked in my craft room. Would that be OK with you Cindy? Won’t be as perfect as watching and listening at the same time on the computer but at least until I get a lap top. What do you think??

Cindy I have just made two of your wonderful canes, I loved doing them, the first i didn’t like the colors to much so i made another i was very pleased with how they came out and have already covered some old beads but now its time for me to stop and get night time drinks. and its another day tomorrow, if it rains I can bead all day woopee.

I love this! So easy and quick. I have a busy weekend taking Senior pics for my BFF’s daughter on Saturday and then off the the Apple Butter Fest in Grand Rapids, OH on Sunday. I wonder if I’ll see any polymer clay artists. So, I’ll have to to wait until Monday to try this new technique! Boo!!

Cindy when did you first start your business? I would love to know your story about how you created this wonderful place for all to enjoy. Our business is slow in the winter so I can’t wait to pull my clay out and will have alot of tutorials to learn from! Thank You So Much ! I really enjoyed this spliced flower cane tutorial Cindy! I think by far it’s one of my favorites.And I plan on using it this weekend .We just had a big craft fair we attended today, it was so disappointing. I sold only one bracelet and my friend sold one necklace !! My good friend Kathi Gose who is also my Guild President was there too, she sold about $40.00 so she broke about even on her booth rental. This economy has really hit the crafters world hard and heavy I don’t even want to do anymore . I’m working on getting my stuff on Etsy so that’s what’s next on my agenda , anyway have a blessed weekend and Thank’s Again !

I am new to polymer clay and want to make beads and the flower canes, I have a couple of questions that I would like your advice on
When baking the beads can they be placed directly on card stock and covered or should they hang to something?
Can you save the flower canes and bake at a later date?
The fimo in the UK says to bake for 20 minutes but you say an hour in your video, is an hour better?

Hi Tanya, You can place beads on an accordion folded piece of cardstock to bake on. But make sure you don’t leave on the paper for very long before baking because the paper will leach out the oils from the clay.
My preferred thing to bake on is a bead rack, you can either make one yourself with a tinfoil loaf pan, or you can buy one like this (**Amazon Affiliate Link). And you will need some bead piercing pins. Fimo sells them, I got mine at Michaels, but you can also get them here (**Amazon Affiliate Link).
For the flower canes, you can save those for a long, long time before you need to bake them.
For Fimo I prefer to bake for a longer time, 45 – 60 mins. That will ensure that you have a proper cure and the clay will be strong. Make sure you have a separate oven thermometer, so you know that you are baking at the correct temperature.
Spend some time looking through this site and watching the videos. There is tons of excellent information, that will get you started. When you’re ready, I also have many paid tutorials that will help you develop your skills. You be able to find those here… Polymer Clay Tutor Videos
