Polymer Clay Projects | Faux Leather Jewelry Key Chain + Rose Bead

Faux Leather Key Chain Pendant and Rose

“Cindy I would love to see more photographs of your work.” ~Tereasa

One more picture coming right up! Today it is of a faux leather key chain, complete with a miniature faux leather rose… all created with Studio by Sculpey clay. It was actually my Harry Potter book charm project that initially got me started fooling around with these leather like textures.

Unlike the book charm where I used crumpled and straightened tin foil to create the texture, on this key chain tag I used the lines in the palm of my hand to get the leathery look.

I also added some faux stitching along the outer edge of the tag and a stamped a crown image on the front using a rubber stamp. The natural leather look was further enhanced by using some Studio by Sculpey Antiquing Medium in Chocolate Brown.

The rose softens the masculine look of the key chain which I plan to useĀ  myself. Without the rose, a faux leather tag like this would be perfect for a man. Especially with a masculine image or initial stamped into the surface.

Bravo Cindy! How often does it seem like polymer clay is more for us girls making jewelry and knicknacks. I like the fact that men can be included in receiving gifts from the polymer world too! ~Maria

If there is enough interest in faux leather, I will add it to the list of video tutorials. Let me know…

I second that Ken! I also saw that someone mentioned an ikat cane in a comment of an earlier post. Would love to see a tutorial of that too!

  7. Jeanne, 09 August, 2009

    Hi Cindy,

Charlie and I are still traveling, wifi on the road isn’t always available so I really miss reading your blog daily. I’ll have a lot of reading to do when I get home the end of Sept. I love the key chain with the faux leather. My grandsons are into sports so I can see personalizing them with sports logo, also would be great for luggage tags. Looking forward to a tutorial.

Count me in too! At first I thought only the rose was clay and wondered how you got it to look like the “leather” tag! Here they are BOTH clay!! Cool! That is some far-out- faux!!

  9. Jocelyn, 09 August, 2009

Love these, Cindy, you nailed it! Awesome color and details. Please share how!

  10. Dawn, 09 August, 2009

I love the look of that key chain. The more I learn the more awesome things I see that can be made of polymer clay. FUN!

  11. Klay Kisses, 10 August, 2009

Yes Cindy, please do a tutorial on this one for sure. Love the look. So many possibilities.

  12. Freda, 10 August, 2009

    Yes! Do it!

  14. Laurel, 10 August, 2009

I love your faux stitching on your faux leather. It makes it look so real. I too like the fact that we can make some “guy” things. Thanks for the idea Cindy and yes, I would like to see you make the leather too.

  15. Laurel, 10 August, 2009

Oh, by the way, does the crown mean that you are the Queen? Don’t know about your household but definitely the Queen of Clay. he he

  16. Cindy Lietz, 10 August, 2009

Yes Laurel of course the crown means I’m the Queen! :-)

Thanks guys for all the great comments! I love the idea of making luggage tags Jeanne. That’s a great idea!

Are there any other Faux Animal Skins you guys are interested in learning about, ie. snake or crocodile, etc?

  17. Jocelyn, 10 August, 2009

Raises hand, gestures wildly….animal prints, leather textured, giraffe….fur-like ringlet tails or scales? LOL!!! Tute request please. Oh my, this winter is going to be a blast.

Please also…minerals? Geodes, crystals, granite, and most of all, your “take” on malachite.

  18. Catalina, 10 August, 2009

Crocodile sound good! Jocelyn’s ideas are cool too. Geodes, crystals and granite!! I hope we aren’t going to put you, Cindy, in over-drive, but hurry!! :0)

  19. Klay Kisses, 11 August, 2009

Ditto on Jocelyn’s suggestions. All of the above. Pretty Please?

Hi Cindy, I’m all over the faux opals. One of my favourite stones. I’ve looked at some of the versions on the web and haven’t been overly-impressed. Would love to see your version.

  22. Cindy Lietz, 27 October, 2009

Thanks everyone for your feedback! I am working on a faux opal that is using some of the techniques out there but combined in my own sort of way. Will do a tute on it when I can.
