Polymer Clay Colors – Which Ones to Start With

Polymer Clay Colors

Vid #014: Seven Starter Colors For Beginner Polymer Clay’ers.

It’s best to limit the number of clay colors you work with when first starting out as a beginner. Choosing one of each in the chart will not only be expensive, but you will also have a difficult time making them all flow together nicely.

One Premo brand beginner combo set that I recommend, includes: White, Black, Translucent, Zinc Yellow, Cadmium Red Hue and Cobalt Blue. You will be able to mix up a wide range of your own custom colors from these initial choices.

Do you have any polymer clay color mixing horror stories or successes to share? I’d love to hear them.

Can you say MUD!! I have had my fair share of mixing the wrong colors together. I have never had a course in color theory and learned pretty quickly that is is difficult to always get the desired result. But thanks to your color recipes I’m doing a lot better now!

Thanks Katina! Color mixing can be a challenge but if you start first by using recipes, you can get a handle on how certain colors of polymer clay will behave.

Keep doing that and you will find it becomes easier and easier to get the results you are looking for.

Hi Cindy, I’m laid up with shoulder surgery and got interested in silverware art etc. You got my attention about polymer clay can you give me some tips on where to buy and how to use this stuff?

Hi Dave – It’s great to see that you are interested in learning about Polymer Clay. Your reference to the shoulder injury reminded me of an article I published a while back about polymer clay being used as a form of art therapy. Here’s an excerpt…

“A well known polymer clay artist by the name of Mike Devine is a New York City Policeman who looked to polymer clay as a way to help him deal with a particularly traumatic event. He needed something to do during his recovery phase. Today Mike continues to develop his polymer clay skills and says this focus really helps in coping with the many job related stresses he deals with on a daily basis.”
