Well the African Violets are blooming like crazy again in my kitchen windowsill. And with gorgeous shimmery colors like this, it makes the perfect inspiration for a pearly polymer clay color palette!
These rich purple African Violet blossoms are the inspiration for the Vol-038 A-series color recipes. They will be added to the Polymer Clay Members Library in July 2011:
- Charcoal Pearl (Recipe 038-1A)
- Lilac Pearl (Recipe 038-2A)
- Freesia Pearl (Recipe 038-3A)
- Violet Shimmer (Recipe 038-4A)
Drawing from the dark shadows found behind the protruding petals, Charcoal Pearl is a shimmering Black with undertones of Violet and Silver. Lilac Pearl is the soft pearly Bluish Purple, found in the highlights of the flower petals. Freesia Pearl represents the more Fuchsia colored Purple, near the center of the blooms. And Violet Shimmer is the sparkling deep Purple, most dominant in this African Violet plant.

Hi I have been doing polymer clay for awhile now and have seen a few color charts but I think your recipes are the best I have seen. I was having a hard time figuring out how to get the purple for the violets I was making, and then I seen your blog. A friend of mine had sent me the link to your videos and I have enjoyed every one of them so far. Thanks for being such a great person. ~Linda-G
Violets are favourites of mine. I love the colours. The little sweet violets I grow in my vegetable garden, as companion plants and occasional salad items, have started to grow again now the weather’s warming up. Looking forward to being able to get working in the garden again! ~Silverleaf

@pollyanna: Yes, it’s great to have the Recent Comments back…I really missed them.
Polyanna, I assume you mean African Violets, which should be watered from below…did you know that? You can buy special African Violet pots that have two parts to them. There is a top section where you put the soil and the plant. That top section is porous on the underside. It fits into a deep bottom piece that you fill with water. The water seeps from the bottom piece through the porous underside of the top piece and gives your plant exactly the amount of water it needs at all times. I’ve gone out of town for two weeks, and as long as I put the plant in a location where it won’t get too much sun, it will be fine when I return. African Violets like filtered sunlight.
Cindy, these are lovely colors. I especially like that you’re giving them a pearly, shimmery look. It’s very realistic.

I can confirm this is a great idea. I torture houseplants. Grandmother grew violets from cuttings and had a multi-colored collection covering two huge tables. I killed countless numbers of her gifts.
Finally, a couple of years ago, I decided to make violet bunches from polymer clay, so that I had the effect and the color of the houseplant. Made a couple, using her old pots and love them….though I do not put them at eye level, lol.

@Silverleaf: I saw these colors and KNEW you would be crazy about them, too! I can’t wait for these! I just cashed in my rain check for Premo Accents clay at .99 cents a piece! Went crazy!! But, with my dad in the hospital and my mother-in-law, both are doing better and may come home soon, I haven’t had any time to play. We got to Skype again, soon!

I just delivered a special order of two purple bracelets. Of course I had to make four so she’d have a choice. I started with a purple more like the dark purple at the center of the flower. On one of them I took the first purple and made torn watercolor paper beads that turned out to be a pinky-purple more like the 3-A shade.

I’m going to try those colors with our native grow in the lawn johnny-jump ups. Think it will make a stunning cane if I use all the similar type methods you’ve taught us. Back to the videoes in the vault, lol……………..

As far as my Violets go, I keep them in a self watering device I made myself. I took a long trough style planter and put a block of floral foam in the bottom, then set my pots of violets on the foam. I always keep enough water in the trough that the foam stays soaked, but the bottom of the pots aren’t sitting in water. When the plant needs water, it wicks the water up from the foam. Every once in awhile I throw a little plant food in the water, and then have been blooming for years. They are probably 15 years old now.
@claycass: Hi Claycass: Currently, the only way to collect the B-series color recipes is to actually download them to your computer when my email newsletter arrives in your inbox each Friday. Due to problems that arise with digital theft, the B-series recipe links in the email newsletters do expire after a couple of weeks. That being said, I am working on setting up a secure archive section at the library, which will make it more convenient to access the recipe cards. However, this resource is not yet ready. I will make an announcement here at the blog when it is. Thanks for your patience.
