Polymer Clay Color Recipes | Snapdragon Flower Palette [Premo]

Snapdragon Flower Polymer Clay Color Palette 1A: Snapdragon
2A:
Buttercup
3A: Mossy Pathway
4A: Cranberry Bog

I have a soft spot in my heart for the Snapdragon flower. Not because of its ruffled beauty. Nor because when you squeeze it gently on the sides, the flower opens its mouth like a Dragon and then ‘snaps’ shut when you let go. Those things are wonderful. But I love the Snapdragon because of my husband Doug.

More than 20 years ago when we were first married and were on a trip somewhere in the United States (can’t remember where actually), we were walking through a park and Doug bent down and picked a Snapdragon. I thought he was going to give to me. But instead he brought the flower right up to my face, squeezed it by the cheeks and said “Roar”.

Now I had probably seen this done before when I was a kid. But when he did it, Doug made me feel like it was the first time. The delight I felt at that moment, I never forgot. And to this day, every time I see this darling flower I smile and re-live that memory.

So, when I saw this Snapdragon had seeded itself in my back garden, I just had to make a polymer clay color palette for all of you.

The following individual recipes will be added to the Polymer Clay Members Library during the month of Aug-2010 in Vol-027 [A-Series]:

  • Snapdragon (Recipe 027-1A)
  • Buttercup (Recipe 027-2A)
  • Mossy Pathway (Recipe 027-3A)
  • Cranberry Bog (Recipe 027-4A)

Snapdragon is the candy pink that is so prominent in this sweet little flower which carries such a big roar. Buttercup is the sunny yellow found in the mouth of this fierce Dragon. Mossy Pathway is the mossy Green of the garden’s backdrop. And Cranberry Bog is the deep rich Cranberry Red found blushing the throat of the flower.

Hi Cindy! I have paid the $9.95 for the back issues and am a monthly paying member. The color cards are ingenious…love them! And, since I am a hands on person, I love the videos. Thanks for all your hard work! ~Jayne-S

I save the color recipes to “my pictures”. It allows me to print four on one page which automatically reduces the size. Mine fit in a baby wipes box. Your newsletter makes my Fridays a treat!! Thank you. ~Sandra-G

I just wanted to let you know I have been able to access the videos and recipe cards I signed up for. I’m enjoying your web site and watching your videos. I’m excited about trying your ideas and mixing your recipes. Color mixing is not something I’m especially good at so it’s really helpful to me to have access to color recipes. Best regards.
~Deborah-E

Thank you, Cindy. These color recipe cards are a wonderful resource! ~Marsha-N

This palette is more special because you shared the story that goes with it. I always associate snapdragons with the memory of my mom. They were always among her very favorites, so this will be meaningful for me as well.
    Thanks, Cindy and Doug.

  2. Cheryl Hodges, 21 July, 2010

Beautiful story – memories are made of these. The colors are so pretty too. Every time I see a new palette and learn a new technique I want to go and try them all – I just wish I had more time to clay.

  3. Elizabeth S., 21 July, 2010

    KAT,

WHERE ARE YOU? Pop in, please. It’s not like you not to post for several days. Just let us know you’re ok.

  4. Cindy Lietz, 21 July, 2010

@Elizabeth S.: I was wondering when someone would notice that Phaedrakat has been conspicuously absent over the last few days. Thanks Elizabeth for showing concern. I love how everyone looks out for each other around here.

Kat is fine… the only thing keeping here away right now is some technology woes… here is what she sent me to pass along to you guys.

July 19, 2010: “Hi Cindy, This is a quick email to tell you I am having internet problems. My modem is bad, according to the tech support person I spent an 1.5 hrs on the phone with Saturday. I am going to order one through my provider Monday morning when they open. I’m assuming it will take a few days for it to arrive… it’s killing me to not have access to the internet. I haven’t even had a chance to see Friday’s video tute yet.” ~Phaedrakat

  5. Tanya L, 21 July, 2010

@Cindy Lietz from Micromesh Abrasives Video: Cindy, thank you for the update on Kat!! I was wondering where she was too. I was afraid she was feeling really bad.

  6. Elizabeth S., 21 July, 2010

Doin’ a happy dance knowin’ Kat’s fine!

  7. Jocelyn C, 21 July, 2010

Cindy, thanks for choosing this flower and palette of colors. The snapdragon was very special to me too. When we first moved into our delapitated farm house, while my Dad worked on the insulation, windows, and redid the floors, my Mom started raking, mowing and creating garden areas. The snapdragons were on sale at the local nursery so we got them. Tons of them. My first attempt at planting, watering, and deheading. They grew fabulously. We even saved seed from year to year. Every time I close my eyes I can see those beds of them, in every color imaginable. Such joy. Now, I have to go find some and make them roar, LOL!

Kat, so sorry about your modem problems, been missing you. Hope you’ll be back with us soon and are feeling better each day.

  8. pollyanna, 21 July, 2010

    Another cheer that Kat’s okay.
    Andrea

  9. carolyn, 21 July, 2010

Kat and snapdragons all on the same day. Yes, I’ve been missing you too. You usually have a gazillion posts every day. Roar! Figured it had to be the computer since you do seem always to rise above your pain problems. How ever did you send Cindy an email when your modem was bad?

And my Don’s favorite flower was the snapdragon. One little section in the front Don and I scooped out all the DG (decomposed granite) down about a foot, then added Michigan peat and some other recommended stuff. Yes, among other things we planted snap dragons. They are not supposed to come back here at Tahoe ’cause of our horrid winters. Well, there is one white one that bloomed last year and again this year. Whenever I see it I think how fitting it is … now that he is in heaven, white is definitely his color!

Can’t wait to see what you will be doing with these colors, Cindy.

  10. Jocelyn, 21 July, 2010

@carolyn: Carolyn, this coming winter, see if you can protect that site a little more, so it doesn’t get as cold as the rest. They germinate from seeds, so maybe you could put an old bell jar over the area or put an extra layer of protection down (an old window in a frame?). Bet you might be rewarded with a few more flowers. Sounds like you are on the edge of the planting chart for them. And the white ones are nice. That would make a gorgeous cane with the right background color. White and what?

  11. Tanya L, 23 July, 2010

@Jocelyn: Jocelyn, I’ve noticed you haven’t been posting as much as usual. Are you feeling ok (as in your norm. I hope you’re not in more pain)?

  12. Linda K., 21 July, 2010

Good to know that Kat is OK.

I have always loved the look of Snapdragons, but I had no idea about squeezing the sides. What a fun story! I love these colors, too.

  13. Cheryl Hodges, 21 July, 2010

Thanks cindy for the update on Kat. I noticed she was absent and was about to email her. Glad to know it’s only the computer.

  14. DJ, 21 July, 2010

I was a little worried about Kat too, thanks Cindy for the update.

Snapdragons are the best…I was shown as a child how to “snap” their little mouths open, then showed my stepson when he was little. For years he couldn’t resist walking by one and making it talk. Ok, occasionally I find myself still doing it too =)

  15. Joyce M, 21 July, 2010

It’s all so lovely, the color palette, stories with memories and the fact that Kat’s absence is not a health issue. Good luck, Kat, hope to be reading you soon!

To all of you, please keep my husband, Wayne, in your thoughts and prayers Friday. He’s been fighting lymphoma, (NH) and will have a CT/PET
xray then. Thank you so much.

  16. Elizabeth S., 21 July, 2010

@Joyce M: My heart and prayers will go with you both on this most important day.

    Elizabeth

  17. Linda K., 21 July, 2010

@Joyce M: You and Wayne are in my prayers, Joyce.

  18. carolyn, 21 July, 2010

@Joyce M: Love and peace. My prayers are with you both.

  19. Jocelyn, 22 July, 2010

@Joyce M: Joyce, you and your husband will be in my prayers. Hope the procedure provides good news.

  20. Tanya L, 23 July, 2010

@Joyce M: Joyce, my thoughts and prayers are with you also. Please let us know how things turn out.

  21. Phaedrakat, 25 July, 2010

@Joyce M: Joyce, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your husband. I hope you got good news on Friday, I’ll have to read more posts to see if you wrote about what happened yet. I hope and pray the CT/PET comes back clean. I’ll continue to pray for your DH Wayne, and for you, of course. Bless you both!

  22. Silverleaf, 22 July, 2010

I love these flowers too, they come in so many lovely colour combinations. I really will have to get some for my garden when I get it sorted out – I have a pretty big garden but it’s very neglected at the moment. I can see some raised flower beds with brightly coloured flowers of lots of different types when it’s all finished! Either ones that seed themselves freely or perennials would be best as I haven’t got the energy to buy or raise and plant annuals every year.

Luckily I have enough room that I can let an area grow semi-wild and just trim it twice a year, to provide habitats for wildlife.

  23. pattw, 25 July, 2010

Joyce M -add my prayers to all the above. Collective unconsciousness really works in prayer whether you are religious or spiritual. So all this love has got to help !

Kat- darn! we all miss you. Glad it is in the computer, and not in you body. IT hurts, but no physically. Hope all goes well ! Hear from you soon…….hugs

  24. Phaedrakat, 25 July, 2010

Thanks everyone! That was nice to hear people wondering about me, and saying you missed me. But now come on—you guys were actually glad to have the right side bar not clogged with “Phaedrakat” comments…   ;D

Whew, it really shows how reliant we are on technology when something like this happens. I felt so out-of-touch! I also bank online, pay my insurance, and many other things, so I was really missing the web. We had family visiting the week before last, which kept me away from the blog a bit, and then the web started going out intermittently. I couldn’t deal with it until they left, so it was really bad by the time I spoke with tech support last Sat.

Luckily, my new modem/router came in the mail yesterday. I was able to get it set up without too much difficulty, so that was good! My nephews were ecstatic. The youngest was concerned about his Farmville animals—yeah, I know!—and the other was dying to play his Playstation 3 online with other players. He was tired of playing his games alone—he said it’s not as much fun. Sounds about right…

@carolyn: My modem problem was intermittent, and getting worse every time I turned it back on. So, in order to send Cindy the email, I typed up the message in notepad first, and then plugged in my modem. When the web came up, I quickly signed into my email, pasted in the new message to Cindy, and pushed “send!” It was probably funny to my nephews, they watched me trying to rush around before the modem kicked me off!

I was able to sign on a couple more times to see the blog postings, but I could never get to my email again, nor watch video or anything, of course. I tried to turn the modem on every 2 days so I could copy the list of comments on the right side. I wanted to be able to see what was discussed while I was gone! It will take me awhile to get back to them, though. I’ll have to do that after catching up on all the great stuff I missed. Carolyn, you had asked about the purpose of that list a couple weeks ago—that’s how important it is to me!

    Thanks again, everyone! Hugs, ~Kat

  25. Phaedrakat, 25 July, 2010

I forgot to mention this gorgeous Snapdragon palette! Cindy has made an especially beautiful palette with stunning colors we can mix up—she’s the queen of recipes! Actually, she’s the queen of lots of things: Queen of Tutes, Queen of Polymer Clay Info, Queen of (okay, this is silly, right?)

Anyway, I love the story about how Doug made the Snapdragon “roar.” When I was young, my grandmother had Snapdragons, and we would do little dialogues with the flowers for hours (poet that don’t know it! LOL) Throughout the years, whenever I’ve come across snapdragons, I’ve always made them “talk”. I’ve shown the flower’s ability to kids or anyone who I felt comfortable enough with (I basically avoided people who I feared might think I was crazy.) I’ve never made them roar, however. Doug definitely has the market on that!

I had snaps growing at my old house, but most of the garden got torn up here for the pool! I’ll have to mix up the palette and make the clay talk or something…

  26. Peggy Barnes, 26 July, 2010

Cindy I love your Snapdragon story and most of all Doug’s “roar” It is so sweet to know there is still true love out there to be found and kept. The colors are so rich and deep. I am sure you will make something amazing out of these colors. Once again the artistic duo has managed to design yet another color palette. How many is that for you now????
Thank you both for everything you do for all of us asking so little in return. We all owe you so very much. God Bless you and your family.
    Many Uuuuuuggggs, Peggy

  27. Peggy Barnes, 26 July, 2010

Doesn’t Catalina have her surgery this morning or am I confused like normal? Either way she is in my prayers as with Joyce and her husband.
May God be with all of you.
    Many Uuuuuugggs, Peggy

Has it been brought up that this is a 5th Friday so there will be no Tute. I have been out of the loop for a week with my grandaughter and haven’t caught up yet so curious to see if anything else has been planned??
    Uuuugggs, Peggy

  28. Phaedrakat, 27 July, 2010

@Peggy Barnes: Hi Peggy, yes, as far as I know Catalina’s surgery was today (yesterday, Monday.) I prayed for her, and I sure hope that it went well. That poor woman has been suffering so much with both issues going on at once!

I didn’t know you’d been away while I was. I hope you had lots of fun with your granddaughter! I was away ‘cuz my internet was down. I also had family out the week before that, so I was already way behind. Now it’s even worse, and I’m busier than usual with other things. Seems like everything is breaking around here or “coming due”, and other things like that. I just haven’t had time for anything lately!

I towed my car to the shop today; I’m going to have to borrow some money to get it fixed. But I finally realized I can’t rely on others for transportation—they just aren’t helpful enough! They give me so much grief when I mention needing to get something or go somewhere. It drives (unintentional pun) me nuts, because I have always been good about loaning my cars, giving cars, giving rides, and loaning money to my family. They seem to have forgotten. So instead of selling my car like I wanted, I have to fix it. It’s going to cost money I don’t have, but I’ll figure it out somehow, and repay the “loan”. Unfortunately, I can’t afford to get the AC in it fixed yet. I’m super-sensitive to heat, but I’ll just have to carry an ice cooler w/ice packs in it or something, especially for when the hot flashes hit! Luckily, our summer has been pretty mild so far. I know that won’t last, but I’ll keep my errands to the evenings, and it won’t be quite as bad.

It’s going to be so nice to be mobile again; I’ve always been independent, so I hated having to rely on others for transportation. Some of it was nice at first, like being dropped off at the store entrances and being able to take my pain meds without worrying about having to drive. I have to be more careful, and only take the bare minimum that enables me to move—can’t take enough to stop the pain or it’s dangerous.

Haven’t heard anything about the 5th Friday yet, but I’m quite behind. I guess we’ll find out soon enough! I hope this finds you well and feeling good without too much pain. Be chattin’ with you soon! Uuugggs to you! ~Kat

  29. pattw, 29 July, 2010

@PHADRAKAT – wheels again – what freedom. Hurray !!!!!!!! The independence is back. Ya gotta feel better….hugs

  30. Phaedrakat, 31 July, 2010

@pattw: Thanks, Patt! Ooooh, yeah, it feels GOOD! I went and got some unhealthy fast food earlier today for lunch–just because. It felt so good to leave the house, just because I could! Yay! Hugs back… ~Kat

  31. MalindaJ, 20 August, 2010

I wish there was an easy way to find colors in the color chart section. When you go there we don’t see the lovely pics that are showed with the weekly newsletter. I find this extremely confusing! I want to see them fast and easy please!!

  32. Cindy Lietz, 20 August, 2010

@MalindaJ: I hear you and agree. It’s an issue that will be fixed. So much to do, so little time. In the mean while, the color palette photos are included in each of the weekly email newsletters. And they are also posted here at the blog on a monthly basis. If you use keywords like “recipe organization” in the search box, you will find many more tips, ideas and advice regarding the recipe cards and color palette photos.
