Mad Scientist Polymer Clay Halloween Spooker

Polymer Clay Spooker

Wishing You And Your Family A Safe, Happy And Creative Halloween!

Halloween is such a fun and creative time of the year. I love helping the kids come up with costumes. The photo is of my son Fisher in his Mad Scientist Costume!! Great hair eh? It’s a little like his mama’s doo in this shot: The Polymer Clay Tutor’s Evil Plan

For me there is nothing better than a homemade costume at Halloween. When I was a kid we would dig through some old clothes and become Old Ladies, Hobos, Pirates, whatever seemed fun. And we would head out with Dad while Mom stayed home handing out candy.

Things were simple then. A sheet with holes for a ghost was good enough. But it also seemed that it was a more creative time. For me, even to this day, buying a costume off the rack does not seem very fun. And forget about the same costume year after year… I couldn’t do it. And neither could my kids.

Luckily handmade costumes are pretty easy for us to come up with. Never have to pay a dime for them either, because we probably have the best dress up trunk North of Hollywood!

It started back in the 80’s. I was a teenager then and most of our regular clothes were costume worthy! ;-) Back then, with the money I made at my part time job, I bought myself an old trunk to put my keepsakes in. Some of my more favorite clothes went into the trunk, along with a couple of items mom and dad had saved from when they were younger.

As you can imagine, being the 80’s meant there were some pretty interesting items in that trunk. A white satin jacket with red and white elastic… A jean jacket with shoulder pads and mirrors on it… Purple, red and green plaid wool stirrup pants… Rainbow ‘Mork from Ork’ suspenders… and of course, leg warmers in a couple of different color combinations!

After my husband and I got married, Doug bought me an even larger ‘circus trunk’, that stood up on end and opened up with clothes racks and drawers. I started to put anything and everything that would be fun to save for a costume someday. Belts, hats, jewelry, clothes, shoes, scarves, etc.

Friends and family started adding to it, with old accessories and costumes they were getting rid of. And to this day the collection is just getting bigger all the time.

However, because of everything going on with the recent launch of the Polymer Clay Members Library, we didn’t go to the family Halloween dance at the kids school this year. So Doug and I didn’t get a chance to dress up. But the kids are having parties at school today and we will all go Trick or Treating tonight.

You can see by the photo, Fisher is ready to go in his Mad Scientist Costume. Our daughter Willow is ready too… with her Killer Bee Outfit… complete with yellow and black horizontal stripes, black witch style hair, army boots, a utility belt, sunglasses and black lace gloves.

Hope you all have a fun and safe Halloween with your families. And don’t eat too much of your candy all at once!

Do you have any fun family Halloween stories to share? I’d love to hear them.

  2. Angela, 01 November, 2008

    Linked over from Island Life…

Love that little mad scientist. I agree with you 100%…homemade costumes are SO much fun! (Not that I have anything against people who buy them “off the rack”…it just doesn’t appeal to me) What a fun thing to have started a trunk full of costume treasures! I’ll bet your kids have a ball dressing up!

  3. Cindy Lietz, 02 November, 2008

    @Tina: Thanks for the tag!

@Angela: Thank you for your comment! I’m not against people who want to buy costumes either… makes a ton of sense when you are really busy!

We refer to our dress-up trunk as the ‘Tickle Trunk’ named after the Canadian Kids show, Mr. Dress Up, who had a ‘tickle trunk’ full of costumes!

Oh, how envious I am. I have tossed out or donated so many wonderful costume worthy outfits. My hubby and I lived in a small apartment for years, and gradually our moms both said our junk had to go (who can blame them). My hubby still has his “nerd” costume that we made several years ago and I always do something kooky for the holiday, but I am so kooky everyday, that people don’t know if I’m dressed up or not. The mad scientist is awesome! Will we be seeing a shot of the Killer Bee?

    Take care, Susan

Sorry Susan, I was not able to get a pictyre of the Killer Bee costume before my daughter buzzed out the door. And I wasn’t able to convince her to dress up again for a photo opp. The costume did turn out very cute though. Thanks for asking!

Hi Linda, I didn’t actually buy his costume. My mom is a teacher and had sewn a couple kid sized lab coats for her students to wear when doing lab experiments. We used one of those, added a plaid shirt and velvet bow tie, an old pair of 3-D glasses, and a pocketful of things like a calculator, pens, ruler, etc. The hair is his own and was just teased into a bit of an Einstein look. Good luck with your costume. Hope you find what you are looking for and have fun with your kids this Halloween!
