Video #771: It’s expensive… but it truly is a game changer polymer clay tool, if you want the best of the best for your studio.
This something that I know a lot of you have been waiting for… my PcT review about the brand new Lucy Clay Mammoth Machine for conditioning and rolling sheets of polymer clay.
This product is unlike any other polymer clay pasta machine on the market today. Pretty much every issue that you may have experienced with a pasta machine in the past, has been solved by this amazing tool. It truly is the Cadillac of pasta machines for the discerning polymer clay artist.
Here is my run down of the Pro’s… and yes even the Con’s, that you should consider before purchasing something like this for your polymer studio.
Pros:
- No more clunking gears.
- No more broken machines.
- No more rollers lines at thicker settings.
- No more rippling at thinnest settings (use plastic sheets).
- No more black streaks on clay.
- No more impossible to clean scraper blades.
- No more slicing small blocks to get through rollers.
- No more doubling/tripling sheets for thick slabs.
- No more piecing together skinny sheets.
- No more handles falling off.
- No more broken clamps.
- No more clamping on an edge of a table.
Cons:
- Price. $390 US – $520 US without the slicer or extras.
- Size. Really Huge! I needed a separate lower table for it.
- Roller support knobs are annoying to have to keep re-adjusting.
- 3-D Printed Scrapers still collect some clay.
- Width guides. I didn’t go into it on the video but I don’t like the design.
All in all this machine is a total game changer when it comes to pasta machines for rolling sheets of polymer clay. If you are a professional polymer clay artist, or you just have to have the best of everything, then you’re gonna want to have a Lucy Clay Machine… Mammoth or Elephant!.

Great review Cindy. I would like to add that you do get used to the three knobs system very quickly. The benefit of the three knobs in my opinion. Is that you can set it to be able to get perfectly even skinner blends but don’t get longer on one side. The new scraper blades are a vast improvement. And I do agree that nylon blades would even make it better.
Thank you Jan for saying that! I agree, you can adjust the knobs so that the sheets are perfectly even and they don’t take long to get used to. I know Jiri is looking into having the scrapers manufactured to be even better but it is expensive to have done in small batches. Another material such as nylon or whatever is the most suited for strength, durability and compatibility would be excellent to see, so I look forward to seeing what they do there. All in all this machine is a real game changer!

I live in Pollock Pines and am trying to find someone who might have a Lucy Mammoth machine or even the Elephant or Squirrl so I can see one before ordering. Do you know if anyone in Northern California near Lake Tahoe/ Pollock pines that has one?
Hi Karl, I’m sorry I don’t know of anyone in your area that has a Mammoth or Squirrel that you can test out. I can say that after having both machines for a couple of years now, that I am still very pleased with the functionality of them. I honestly love how easy they are to clean and being able to start with a full block of clay and roll down to a paper thin sheet, is a feature I could no longer live without. They are expensive but if you have the means and you do a lot of claying, the price is well worth it.
Do you have any further updates on this machine or recent videos on any of the Lucy Clay products?

Hi Patty, I do not have any new videos but I do know that there is now a brand new 2020 version of the Lucy Clay Squirrel Machine available (I do not have it so I don’t know that much about it yet other than it has an even larger opening for thicker slices, which seems awesome!) I do have the latest Stainless Steel Extruder and it is fantastic! The quality is extremely high and would be a once in a lifetime purchase. I have also received some of the stencils and Lucy Clay Glassymer which are quite interesting. Once we are back to filming on YouTube I will do some updates on more current products. Until then I suggest following Lucy Clay on Instagram. They do regular stories and posts of all of their new products.

Hi Susan, they only make the Lucy Clay Machines in batches now, so you have to reserve one and wait for production. The machines have changed a bit since this review and they now carry “new and improved” models called the Squirrel 20 and Baby Squirrel 15. Here is the link if that is something you are interested in.
