Cindy Lietz Studio Tour – Polymer Clay Tutor – 5th Friday

Cindy Lietz Polymer Clay Tutor StudioVideo #215: “I think you should show us your studio. It would be an inspiration to us all.” ~Bette-L

Well tomorrow is another 5th Friday… which means no new video tutorial posted at the members library… and no  new color recipes either. If you are new around here and don’t know what I’m talking about, here’s a link for more info about how 5th Friday’s work.

But I do have a special presentation to share instead of the regularly scheduled programing. It’s something that several of you have asked me for in the past… a peak into my creative studio space.

So here you go…

Be sure to leave a comment below if you would like to see more of these informal video blogs in the future.

Happy 5th Friday everyone! My regular video and color recipe publishing schedule will start back up again in the first week of August, with Vol-039.

The first video in Volume 39 will focus on a topic that many, many of you have been so patiently waiting for. Here’s a hint…

It starts with Pan… and ends with Dora ;-)

  1. Fran Y., 28 July, 2011

Sounds great Cindy. Looking forward to seeing your creative space :-) Informal videos would be great on the 5th Fridays.

  2. Diana Adams, 29 July, 2011

Dear Cindy, enjoyed this video and cannot believe how much stuff you have so well organized in such a small space. Looking forward to the filming studio also. You look so well and happy. Your husband, Doug is also very good at his filming (videos) and it is a blessing that he supports you in this wonderful project. You are a great teacher and very caring and considerate person. Thank you and Doug for all that you both do. A happy student!!!

  3. fran, 28 July, 2011

Loved your video. So great to see where all your creative ideas turn into all these terrific videos for us each week. Please tell us your workspace doesn’t always look that neat !! Maybe you can turn the camera on Doug next time so we can see him too – and also those creative children who seem to be following in your footsteps.

  4. Catalina, 28 July, 2011

I wish I could view this. I only get sound – no video. Bummer! I’l have to wait til I can get into my studio later and view it on my desk top computer. By the way, I have been working on mine, too! It is almost completed. I have an enclosed room now. I no longer share my space with my husband. I really miss that, he was my DJ, but he’s on 2nd shift right now anyways. I’m getting it set up to give private lessons! As well as, setting up space to scrapbook! These two crafts really mesh together nicely! I want to start making my own scrapbook embellishments. It’s raining here so it might be a good day to play with clay!

ADDED NOTE FROM DOUG: The iPad compatibility issue will get worked out, not to worry. Unfortunately things don’t always happen as quickly as I would like. Just wanted to let you know that development is heading in the right direction :-)

  5. Jill V., 28 July, 2011

Loved the video! Thanks for sharing.

  6. Anna Sabina, 28 July, 2011

That was fun. But…I too want to know if it always looks so neat!!!

    Anna

  7. Marlene C, 28 July, 2011

Enjoyed seeing your work studio, and plan on making sure my “hubby” watches too, since he doesn’t understand why I am always hunting at garage sales, looking for more storage bins and shelves! With over 500 drawers, you are well ahead of me, but will do my best to “catch up”!

  8. Patricia L, 28 July, 2011

    Hi Cindy,
I’m new with polymer clay so I don’t have a studio like yours “YET”, but at work I found a piece of tile and I bring my clay to work and practice making beads when nobody is around. The other day my boss came in and I had to slide the tile down my legs to the floor so he wouldn’t see what I was doing. Lost a few beads!!!! Keep up the good work!
    Pat

  9. Iris Mishly, 28 July, 2011

Cindy! :) It’s so cool to see your studio, it’s an amazing space! LOTs of Drawers and goodies!!

Thank you for showing it to us and I hope you don’t breathe the fumes too much… ;)

    Love it!
    Iris.

  10. Cindy Graveline, 28 July, 2011

I love your studio! I wish I had a studio like this! So many drawers! And it’s nice to see you! :)

  11. Jeanne C., 28 July, 2011

Great video of you and your studio. It’s so nice to have the space to work and store everything in one room, it makes designing easier. Thanks for sharing. :)

  12. pattw35, 28 July, 2011

Thanks for a great 5th Friday ! Your studio is soooooooooo organized. Even when I clean up, after your tutes LOL, it still isn’t so tidy. But having a 8’x10′ (ex-bedroom) is so wonderful. I can close the door tee-hee. So I do have privacy . I have my computor across from the work table. So I roll across during the tute. It’s small – but hey – it’s mine. ;D

  13. Jocelyn, 28 July, 2011

What fun, Cindy…..my Dad would be proud of you for using every single sqaure inch of usable space in that little room. The one thing I walk away with is how much clear see through space those organizer shelves provide, a key for me, because I am visual….I need to see it to remember to use it.

For years, I gave my Dad those type of storage boxes for his workshop. You and he would feel pretty comfortable in the same space, lol.

  14. j frederick, 28 July, 2011

love seeing your video wish i had all your drawer space i’m constantly
rearranging it trying to get it more compact yet have everything i need to work so i’m not buying more, when does trhat ever end.i used to be a decorative painter so i have a lot of stuff left from that but i think the polymer clay has won out. has any won heard of popcorn beads i had a lady
at a caft show ask me about them i was wondering if i could make them out of clay let me know thanks

  15. Rebecca (Becky) Chisenhall, 28 July, 2011

Hey, Cindy….your tiny little drawers are not LABELED? How do you keep up with what’s in them? I have those same drawers (not as many) in my garage, not labeled, and you got it, every time I am looking for something I have to open each and every drawer!!! I need a label maker in a bad way.

I guess you are young enough to have a good memory, lol. No, make that a great memory! Loved this video, tho, and love your space. One day I am moving my “studio”, which right now consists of my kitchen dining area table and a rolling chest-thingy with 3 drawers (plus the top of my dresser–eeek—by the back door, from there to the master bedroom. When I can get my son to stop in and stay for longer than 5 minutes to help with tables, etc. You have a great studio, though, lots of storage and lots of ideas for us! Thanks for sharing!

  16. Laura R., 28 July, 2011

@Rebecca (Becky) Chisenhall: I got my label maker at Michaels with my 50% off coupon so it was only twelve dollars or so, and then I get the label tape with another coupon. Works great, but truth be told all you really need is a computer, printer and some tape. Type out all of your labels in word in a easy to read font, print the page out, cut them and tape them on. Works just as great and that is what I used to do but I am a gadget girl and just had to have a label maker :)

  17. Rebecca (Becky) Chisenhall, 28 July, 2011

@Laura R.: Lol, it took you to tell me what should be obvious to me–the computer, printing out, taping it on! I guess I am really a gadget girl at heart, too, though. However, for money’s sake until I get a Michael’s coupon, and more importantly, some spare money (!), I could most certainly print out my own labels!!! Thanks, Laura!

  18. Catalina, 28 July, 2011

Well, I finally got to see the video! Very nice!! Love your little cubby drawers! Now I see why you can get creative. You have a very inviting space. That is important, at least for me, to have a space dedicated to your needs. Yes, make another video with more details and the other side!
    Thanks for sharing :)

  19. Stephanie Bargelski, 28 July, 2011

Hi Cindy!! LOVED your studio! Great video for the 5th friday. Love all the mini drawers. I was thinking I needed sometine like that for all of the new bricks of premo I just bought. I have pictures of my studio on my facebook. Nice to have a special space to come to everyday to work. I love all the new things and projects you have for us… Watching someone else do the project is the best way for me to learn. So keep them coming!! You are the high light of my day, Cindy!!!!
    Stephanie :)

  20. Tantesherry, 28 July, 2011

So nice to “see” you in person Cindy–a real treat :)

Not alot of time to play lately–you see my mama is very sick and they don’t know why–the prayer is that they get an ICU bed for her at UNC Chapel Hill hospital. Her name is Mary Sue if you’d like to add her to your pray list. thanks guys-sherry

  21. pollyanna, 28 July, 2011

@Tantesherry: prayers for Mary Sue from western NY. Hope all will be well.

  22. Laura R., 28 July, 2011

@Tantesherry: Sending thoughts and prayers your way! :)

  23. Elizabeth S., 29 July, 2011

@Tantesherry: Your mother is in my thoughts and prayers.

  24. Bonnie B., 29 July, 2011

    @Tantesherry:

Prayers are going up as we speak. God is a good and awesome God and He hears our prayers. By the stripes of Jesus, we ARE healed.!

  25. Joyce Folsom, 29 July, 2011

@Tantesherry: Thoughts and prayers for all of you at this special time, may His blessing flow…

  26. Elaine Faulks, 28 July, 2011

Wow Cindy your studio space is sooo neat n tidy and well laid out.
I used to have my own “studio” 8×6 spare bedroom. Also a weekend static caravan on the banks of a river where I could retreat to and paint etc. Have now down-sized from a three bedroomed property and call my new place my “dolls house.” (As used to make dolls and it’s tiny)

Have a tiny kitchen with a butchers block to sand, drill and polish on. In the one living room have 4 bookcases with boxes of poly stuff and one large cupboard for craft stuff, plus more boxes on my old chest of drawers in the one bedroom.

Every box is labled, but I still find I need to sneak into the bedroom at 2am to get something I forgot I would need for a new project. (Hoping that the snoring continues while I tiptoe out the room!!) My other half is very supportive and must love me as he puts up with all my crazy crafts and will bring me bits and bobs saying “Can you use that”?

One day I WILL get organised or turn the garden tool shed into a studio. In the mean-time I still manage to create on my Grandmas huge old oak table and having to get up from my chair and walk into the kitchen gives me some exercise and time for a coffee-break.(Very important so as not to seize up or get dehydrated) So clay-on everyone wherever you are,so glad I found Cindy and love this site.

  27. Laura R., 28 July, 2011

Cindy, thanks for showing us your studio…love it! very condusive to wanting to create :) I have drawers too, but not that many…I am in the process of labeling them right now as I had rotator cuff surgery two weeks ago and cannot do much of anything so I organized my little clay “studio” and am now labeling drawers. Boy, do I have a lot of stuff. I would be afraid to know how much I have spent on it, but I realize just how addictive this polymer clay thing is and I love it. My husband bought me an industrial type bin organizer and I love it. He found it at Costco for about $99 and it holds so much, is very sturdy and looks great. I can put my books and magazines on the top of it and the magnetic tins with the clear windows stick to the sides of it so it is very useful for storage and making everything look ‘nice’. I have a tough time when everything is scattered about and I can’t find anything. Two other items I find very handy for storing and organizing are the photo boxes that go on sale at Michael’s every now and again 3/$5.00 and the docorative boxes with the magnetic lids (40% – 50% off). They look beautiful and everything is in its place.

Again, thanks for showing us your studio. Love it!

  28. Jan W., 28 July, 2011

Hi Cindy. Love the video and am sooo jealous of your space. I am in the process of moving my work area from my kitchen to my family room downstairs. Would love to have a dedicated room for all my things. maybe some day 8-) Yes, please keep up the videos!!

    Jan

  29. Linda K., 28 July, 2011

I really enjoyed this video, Cindy. It was nice to see your face this time! I love those tiny drawers you have…they’re perfect for clay and beads. And they look so NEAT!

Yes, I’d like to see more of this kind of video on the 5th Fridays.

  30. Bette L, 28 July, 2011

Hi Cindy, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. What a treat to see your work space. All I can say is WOW, you have a great set up.
Remember that Tari Sasser started all this by showing her workspace on Art Bead Scene Blog. Just lately she showed the “cleaned up” version. I thought about you and wondered when we would see your place. Voi-la, here it is. Unfortunately, my work space now has lots more stuff and still is a mess. I keep thinking about organizing and still try sometimes. Maybe I’ll get it done with you inspiration!

  31. Marion, 28 July, 2011

Hello Cindy! How lovely to see you! I had a strange sense of being where I shouldn’t be as your video began; here was someone I’d listened to for so many weeks, looked forward to seeing so much, whom I had put on something like a pedestal, and here she was just chatting to me (and everyone else of course!) as if she were a regular person. Very strange, but lovely too. It will never be quite the same as I watch your videos each week from now on, having ‘met you’ it will be far more like watching a good friend demonstrating some fantastic new technique she’s discovered and sharing it with me! Such a treat! And yes, please let’s see your video studio too, and perhaps even a peek at Doug, if that’s possible (maybe Fisher could point the camera for a few seconds!). Thank you dear tutor, it was so great to see you – and your studio too!

  32. Cassie C, 28 July, 2011

Thanks for showing us your studio. It is a great set up. I would love to know what’s in the little drawers. How do you keep your canes and colors straight etc… It was nice to see your beautiful face as well. Learning from you is a real treat!

  33. Vierra C., 28 July, 2011

Cindy- thanks for inviting us into your studio! It’s actually nice to know that you can create all the amazing things you do with a modest work space. I think a real artist just needs a few tools, and above all else, her creativity. (Well, that’s what I’ve been telling myself as I work out my bedroom. All of my supplies are in a couple of under bed storage containers!) So, next time I feel like complaining about not having enough room to do the few small projects that I do with the space I have, I can remind myself that you’re sustaining AN ENTIRE COMMUNITY of artists and enthusiasts from a 12’x12′ space! :)

  34. Teresa D, 28 July, 2011

My son, Tony, who was watching with me said it best…”That was cool, I want to see more!”
It would be awesome to meet the whole family since they have all contributed to the website.

  35. Lynn Vinge, 28 July, 2011

What a wonderful studio/work space you’ve created. I’d love to see where you & Doug do the tutorial filming too. Just a quick, cute story to share with all of you. My 3 year old granddaughter, Zoey, shares her bedroom with my computer setup. Since she often stays over on the weekends, napping in the afternoon can be quite an issue. To help settle her down for a rest, I sit in the room and watch a couple of Cindy’s tutorials each afternoon. Well, last Monday,Zoey told her Mom she couldn’t take a nap at home without “Cindy Lietz”. I received funny phone call from my daughter wanting to know what film or toy character is named “Cindy Lietz” and where could it be purchased so Zoey would nap!! Another budding Polymer Clay Artist is born. Thanks Cindy!

  36. Freda K, 28 July, 2011

Thanks for letting us come into your studio. I can’t wait to see what’s in all those 500 drawers. It’s Thursday night and I know that at breakfast tomorrow I’ll start to think, “Oh, it’s Friday. I’ve got a tute waiting. Oh, no, I already watched it!”

Loved your story Lynn. Don’t forget to write it in your journal so Zoey can read it when she’s older. I just told a story to my 16 year old grandson from my journal of when he had a new baby brother. He loved it! So did his mom.

  37. Dia H, 28 July, 2011

    Hi Cindy,

wow..amazing studio. Curious what are in the drawer.
Lovely to see you, Cindy. I am so glad, finally I can show my daughter this video. I used to watch your tute video with my daughter, she is 8 years old. She is in summer holiday now, so she likes playing around with clay. She helps me conditioning the clay, company me go to Michael and art store, and sometime she suggested the tool that you have. She said, ” Mommy buy this tool, this like what Cindy Lietz has” :), and One day, she said “Mommy why Cindy Lietz never shows in the video, how she looks like.:) and some other questions . She curious about you.
So when I find this video , ohh..I call my Jasmine right away..you know what she says?? “She is pretty Mommy!” :) so sweet. Thanks Cindy..

  38. Ken H, 28 July, 2011

Fantastic studio, and please keep this concept going for the 5th fridays, it’s truly enlightening to see where all these ideas are worked out until perfected.

  39. Elizabeth S., 28 July, 2011

Loved seeing the studio-it’s wonderful to be able to visualize you sitting there with your creative wheels turning. It will be fun to add that perspective when watching the videos.

I just moved my studio from a spare bedroom to a mouse sized room off the kitchen. It’s surprising me how much I am enjoying the coziness. It also allows me to easily move back and forth between the two rooms in which I feel most creative. I would never win a cooking contest but I love experimenting with food almost as much as I love working with clay.

  40. Cheryl V., 29 July, 2011

Cindy, THANK YOU so much for giving us a glimpse into your world. It is so nice to see you and your studio. I love how organized you are! I hope you and your family have a wonderful weekend. I will be counting the days till next Friday…….. can’t wait!!!

  41. Haffina, 29 July, 2011

I love your studio. Especially as its so neat! LOL I would love to have all that storage space.. and counting the drawers sounds like something I would do.

  42. Shirley Rufener, 29 July, 2011

Thank you for showing us how you organize your supplies, it seems to be one of the most challenging aspects of my polymer clay (plus many other crafts). I think it’s mentioned above but I learned a few years ago the first step to organizing is labling everything. I do have a nice lable maker (thought clear would be best but its’ hard to read from a distance, so I buy the WHITE now).

I am curious now to count my drawers which are every size, as I do a differnet craft on a morning show monthly. I wish I could just play with clay but the studio likes variety!

Please keep the 5th Fri. videos coming, we love ’em! Curious if you can keep unwrapped clay in those drawers, when I started I ‘melted’ all the drawers in a 16 box size. I know some plastics may work, but these didn’t. :)

  43. Pat Griffin, 29 July, 2011

Hi Cindy, how great to see you actually in person and what a lovely studio space you have.I love all your neat little drawers. I have to do all mine in the bedroom and get everything out each time I use polymer clay. My oven is situated downstairs in the outhouse. I really enjoyed your video, would love to see more, thank you.

  44. Ruth Ann, 29 July, 2011

loved your 5th friday video of your craft room,, now it makes me want to get mine more organized,, and maybe get some 500 drawers,, and that will do it,, have a great weekend and stay cool@!!

  45. Janet, 29 July, 2011

Cindy, I really enjoyed this glimpse into your workspace. I too have mega drawers in my workshop, however my biggest challenge is when working on a polymer project which incorporates other beads and findings is putting it all back before I start the next project. Hence my studio usually has 2 or 3 projects worth of stuff laying around before I take the time to put it all away. Your video has challenged me to take this long weekend and totally tidy up my space. I am fortunate to have 2 crafting rooms plus an area in my basement for storage. One room is for my polymer, beading and office supplies, the other room is for my miniture dollhouse supplies and my photo studio and I store my craft and market display units in the basement. Guess I better get on my apron and start the big “sweep”. Thanks again for always providing inspiration.

  46. Phaedrakat, 29 July, 2011

I love it…what fun it is to see your studio! And seeing YOU gives me a warm feeling of happiness — my friendly tutor, in person! I love all those drawers you have…I have quite a few myself, but since I bought them little by little, they’re different sizes & shapes. Not as cool as your setup. Thanks for this wonderful 5th Friday surprise. I would also love to see more like this on “future 5th’s”…

Thanks also for the hint about next week’s tute. Unless there’s something else that starts with__/ends with__, I’m thrilled & can’t wait to see your take. It’s another much-requested video — we must have really got to you this month, LOL! I’m looking forward to your next video, not only because it sounds cool, but because I have the picture of you in your studio in my head. I know where you created & honed your process…exciting stuff!

@j frederick: Hi June, I’m not familiar with a specific type of bead called “popcorn”…maybe someone else is? If the woman who asked about them was talking about regular popcorn, you could certainly make realistic-looking beads out of polymer clay, though…

@Shirley Rufener: Hi Shirley, there’s more storage info here at the blog, including how to use the clear storage bins. You can see photos & storage tips from members like Catalina and Sue F., as well as additional member tips in the comments below the article/photos. Also, try the search function at the top of any page to find clay-safe plastics info. I’ve had the same “melting” experience with the completely see-thru storage bins…they just do not work so well with clay. You could throw your clay in plastic bags, though, or wrap in Glad wrap. Or maybe just line the bottom of your bins where the clay touches…?

  47. Valerie H, 29 July, 2011

Cindy it was so nice to see you and your space. So tidy! It’s fantastic to put a lovely face to the voice. Love this idea for the 5th Friday it lets us get to know you better.

  48. Givelberg Asya, 29 July, 2011

I only can hear you and I can’t to see you.

ADDED NOTE FROM DOUG: For tips on fixing video playback issues you may be experiencing with your web browser, please see this page: Video Troubleshooting Tips

  49. Toni Fine, 29 July, 2011

Greetings from London UK….all the obvious remarks about how interesting and useful your studio tour was have already been made… But what I dont think anyone has said yet is how lovely it was to really see the person behind the voice we have come to know and love! You’re lovely and the photo of you does NOT do you justice. Change it. And keep up the good work. Best wishes, Toni

  50. Beverle, 29 July, 2011

Who knew you were so cute!? Thanks so much for sharing. I have always felt close to you through your videos but now I will have a “friend” each Friday. Love you Cindy!

  51. Carlene Hamerlin, 29 July, 2011

THAT was a great video! Always amazes me what can be done with limited space! Love it! Thanks!

  52. Ann Krake, 29 July, 2011

What a nice visit! Thanks, Cindy!

  53. Donna B, 29 July, 2011

I love the idea of a video on the 5th Fridays. Your studio is impressive. You’ve arranged so much in a limited space. I especially love the little drawers where did you get them? Continue the great work!

  54. Tonya, 29 July, 2011

My craft room aspires to be like your craft room. :) I especially love your little drawers.

  55. Kathy G, 29 July, 2011

Great to see you, Cindy! I loved seeing you work space. with our recent move, I now have my own room for my work space and it is fantastic. Once I get a break between orders, I’ll clean it up and post pics too to share. Have a great weekend!

  56. Simona, 29 July, 2011

I like your working room. The drawers and suplies are very good. I like that and also your tutorials. I very much like making jewelery with polymer clay. Every time I make some jewelery wont make more. I`m only a little sade when people in Slovenia-Maribor where I live donn`t much appreciate the jewelery I make. When I put it on the internet no one buy it.

  57. Joy C, 29 July, 2011

Absolutely loved that video! Nice to see you. Wow, if I could be 1/2 that organized. I think if anything, you inspired me to clean up.

  58. Janet M, 29 July, 2011

great to “meet” you – nice to have a face to match with the voice now. You are cute as a button as the old saying goes and you made me smile on this Friday morning. love the space – and the drawers especially. I too am a visual person so my hubby built me a 6x3x1 foot shelving/storage cubbies unit – it holds 500 blocks of clay plus all my tools and supplies – I would send a picture if I could figure out how!

  59. Jenny S, 29 July, 2011

I’d love to know what’s in the little drawers and where/how you store your unused bits of leftover PC from various projects. That’s my biggest issue with storage. Although I have lots of room, I’m not sure the best way to store these unused pieces for the most optimal re-use.

  60. Christl Pelikan, 29 July, 2011

    @Jenny S:
Jenny, see my comment above regarding storage of leftover PC from various projects!!

  61. Jenny S, 29 July, 2011

    Thanks Christl!
    @Christl Pelikan:

  62. Edieh, 29 July, 2011

    Loved the video YES

  63. Edieh, 29 July, 2011

YES would love to see more! Also the rest of the room and Doug too. My husband is making me a work shop but it is slow in comming but got some great ideas from yours. Love that all the drawers match so you can fit more in a small space. Thanks

  64. Malinda Kopec, 29 July, 2011

Love the vid Cindy, it’s so fun to see how others have set up their spaces. I’m not surprised yours is so efficient and organized! ; )

  65. Michelle L, 29 July, 2011

Wonderful video, it was so nice to see YOU. While I do have a dedicated workroom for all things jewelry, it’s not neat like yours. Wow, am I impressed with that! Yes, I want to see more like this on the 5th Fridays as it helps with not feeling let down that there isn’t a new “Cindy” video waiting for me when I get up in the morning! :)

YOU are in inspiration to all of us.

  66. Cheryl L, 29 July, 2011

Thanks for sharing your studio space with us. I enjoyed watching it and very much enjoy your weekly tutorials. My studio is very similar to yours with respect to size and the number of draws! lol

  67. Sue Z, 29 July, 2011

Oh my gosh, what great organizing ideas! I am new to polymer clay, and already I’m seeing a “space problem” in the near future!! Enjoy your videos so much, thanks!

  68. Marcela Saldaña, 29 July, 2011

hiiiiii Cindy, it was soooo nice to put a face to the voice I hear every friday, even though I see your picture in your blogs, is not the same jajaja, thank you for sharing your beautiful and ordered space, now I know that I really can have all my stuf ordered, I loved the draws, I have boxes but I think I´ll change for draws jajaj. Thank you again for sharing and of course I will love to see more from you.
Cindy, I´m trying to start working with art clay, but I don´t know which brand, there is now a chineese brand in joann on sale, and there is artclay and PMC+: which would you recomend? As you may remeber I´m, from México and a friend is right now in LA so she is going to bring it to me, I´ll apreciate your advise,
Thank you again and a hug from Guadalajara, Mexico

    @Marcela Saldaña: Hi Marcela,

I visited your city many years ago and still remember its beauty, especially the fountains. It seems like they were everywhere–so beautiful.

  70. Joann B, 29 July, 2011

    Hello Cindy
Very nice studio! Great video, thanks for sharing. Love all the mini drawers. I was thinking of making one of my rooms into a studio. I am looking forward to all the new things and projects you have for us… Watching is a good way to learn. So keep them coming. Joann

  71. Libby Dorough, 29 July, 2011

Thanks Cindy: your video was really informative, especially for those of us that are just starting out, setting up a studio (I have a VERY small space in our house) and trying to get organized. Nice to see too that you have areas for different crafts and work, as I want to try lampwork and glass fusing too…can’t seem to stick to one thing :-)

The informal videos are a great idea.

  72. Dalal A, 29 July, 2011

Hi cindy realy it nice to see this video i love it :)

  73. Linda G, 29 July, 2011

Cindy I loved the tour of your studio. It gives me ideas of what I can do to mine. I just love your wall of drawers. I would love to be able to do that someday. Thanks for sharing with us. I would like to see more.

  74. Ruthie Farrand, 29 July, 2011

What a great space! Now I understand how you can crank out so much and keep it all straight. I’d love to see some more vids like this. It lets me know more about you and that I’m not alone here either.
    Blessings,
    Ruthie
    The Embellishment Lady

  75. Sara C, 29 July, 2011

You are not alone and you are more organized than the federal government. I am going to investigate your website now, so thank you for this.

  76. Samone, 29 July, 2011

Hi Cindi: Love your video – your such a nice person and good teacher. One of my favorite things to do is watch your video tutorials and make clay. Take care. Your Pal – Samone.

  77. Billi RS Rothove, 29 July, 2011

I love video visiting artists and their studios. Thank you very much! I want those drawers, so cool.

  78. Elizabeth S., 29 July, 2011

I’m just thinkin’ how fun it would be to see other folk’s creative spaces. Anyone willing? We could post on FB. Let’s add a rule that if you post a pic you can’t clean beforehand ’cause I just know that the rest of you aren’t as meticulously organized like I am. (The mess on my table is a fluke–I have these crafting ghosts who invade my space during the night and mess everything up. So frustrating!) Anyway, just a thought.

  79. Christl Pelikan, 29 July, 2011

Thank you for sharing your studio with us! Cindy, your appearance definately matches your beautiful and creative work. WOW, and are you ever organized! Please come visit me in Germany and/or New York and organize my thousands of Polymer Clay related goodies! That wall of little drawers is totally amazing and impressive! Just love it!
For my sheets of PC and bits and pieces of clay patterns, I thought of a good solution as well. Bought two inexpensive towers intended for CD’s, put one left, one right and placed 50 pieces of cardboard in-between the slots. It holds a lot of unfinished or never finished projects. Throw a see-through plastic table cloth over it and forget about it, well sometimes! Had fun with dried out old pieces: I put fresh clay under the old ones, put it through the pasta machine and made pins from the beautifully crackled sheet, which everybody loved!
Thank you for sharing your never ending great ideas, I think PCP’s (Polymer Clay People) are the best!!!!

  80. Anne R, 29 July, 2011

@Christl Pelikan: What a great idea for storing unfinished items . . .I NEVER would have thought of using CD storage units! I have such a small work space, that I couldn’t think of a really good was to handle that. Since we rent, I don’t want to put anything on the walls, so a freestanding CD tower next to the desk would be good. Thanks for sharing!

  81. Joyce Folsom, 29 July, 2011

@Christl Pelikan: That’s a great idea, thanks for sharing.

  82. Lawrence, 29 July, 2011

Great studio space Cindy and so well organized. Same size as mine (12′ x 12′) but I have a single bed against one wall which is stacked with clay supplies. I like the 5th Friday idea and can’t wait until September now ;-)

  83. Anne R, 29 July, 2011

I enjoyed seeing your space – I’ll bet it isn’t always that neat! I’d love to have even a 10′ x 8′ work space . . .my “studio” is the top of a small desk with a stool next to it for my pasta machine. I’ve been enjoying your tutorials (I’ve learned sooooo much!) and I love seeing the things others have made.

  84. Kathy Bloom, 29 July, 2011

Really nice to see you , Cindy. And I always like seeing how other people organize their supplies. Thanks for the tour.

  85. Catherine Warner, 29 July, 2011

I enjoyed the tour of your studio.. It’s nice to see the Human behind the hands.. Nice of you to share…

  86. Yong Rainey, 29 July, 2011

Wow – Cindy – you are so ORGANIZED. Puts me to shame! You & Doug are a such TERRIFIC TEAM. I just thank you so much for EVERY e-tutorial that you brainstormed up and which your husband captured so very well through the lenses that he films you with. I definitely enjoy these very informal videos on every 5th Friday. Please keep them coming! (I am sure you’ll be inundated with tons of emails from your fans/students.)

  87. Kim Parks, 29 July, 2011

Oh, I’m so glad to get this video. I love your weekly posts and it’s nice to put a face to the voice I know so well. I also love your studio. I’m trying to carve out a space for myself in my home as well. Right now I craft on a table in the living room which isn’t the best, but it works for me right now. Thanks for your inspirational videos each week. They’re certainly one of my highlights.

  88. Deborah Ross, 29 July, 2011

Thanks for the tour, Cindy. Next time I hope we can see the other two walls of your studio space. We might get some storage ideas. I have the same size studio, but because of my wheelchair I don’t get to utilize it as well as you do. Are you always this neat??

  89. Amada S, 29 July, 2011

Thanks a lot Cindy! for showing us your creative place, I always love to see the artist studios. I will show your video to my husband, it will make him to understand that I have so many things in mine. Thanks! I hope to see what you have in your drawers, mmmm! regards

  90. Bonnie B., 29 July, 2011

Cindy, I loved your studio. I have been working on mine and it is really coming together. I have turned my two car garage into my studio. It is no longer referred to as the garage, and why would it be…it is now my studio – haha- Now, if only I could start making money….hhhmmmmmm This video idea is great….keep it up and keep up the good work. It is good to get to “know you” and this really helps. Can hardly wait until Friday gets here and here it is and I was not disappointed. Thanks Doug….you are great to be so supportive and helpful……keep ’em coming….this southern gal is ready to “break out”….. BonnieB

  91. Joyce Folsom, 29 July, 2011

Wow, Cindy, love how you have things so organized. Don’t ever feel alone, some one of us is surely thinking of you pretty much twenty-four-seven.
Reaching so many places in different time zones it really is possible. Will look forward to peeking into some of those little drawers. That area has to be custom built, right? Will have to share this with hubby. He’s not able to customize but he would support me in doing something along these lines.
Very nice, indeed. Thanks for sharing.

  92. Lisa Watkins, 29 July, 2011

I really enjoyed your video. It inspires me on how to set up my studio. Our children are all married now and I have a room to call my own. Randy, my husband calls it my “Woman Cave”. So thank you for sharing your space. You have made yourself closer to your subscribers where we feel like friends:)

  93. connie tyler, 29 July, 2011

Hi Cindy, We finally got to see you. Thank you so much for sharing. Maybe later we can also see Doug and the children? You are so inspiring! I look forward to each video every Friday and hearing your upbeat greeting.

  94. Trudy M, 29 July, 2011

Fabulous creative space. My area is disorganized most of the time, but I did get begin to use the bookcase to store bins and its made life easier. You look wonderful! I’d love to see more studio space on 5th Fridays!

  95. Cindy Lietz, 29 July, 2011

First let me say just how touched I am to read all of your amazing comments! THANK YOU!! I definitely do not feel alone in my studio today! I was going to respond right away, but all of your messages were flowing in so fast that I thought it best to wait a bit, so I could thank more of you all together :-)

A few things came to mind, while reading everyone’s feedback. First of all, I find it just incredible that I can sit here in my somewhat tiny studio and speak with people from all over the world. I mean how cool is it to have Iris Mishly from Israel, then Marcela from Mexico and Simona from Slovenia-Maribor, all leave their sweet words on the same screen! Not to mention all of you from Canada, the United States, Europe, Australia, and other amazing locations. How incredible!

Oh btw Iris, even though my oven is right beside my computer workspace, I don’t find there to be any fume issues. Partly due to the way I bake, there is little to no spiking temperatures and therefor hardly any fumes to begin with. As well, I find Premo doesn’t smell very much while baking anyway, plus there is a window right over my desk I can open for ventilation.

And to answer your question Marcela, I haven’t worked with any of the silver or precious metal clays, so unfortunately, I am not the best to give advice on that. Maybe another member here can help better …?

Next, it was the comments themselves… Lots about how tidy and organized I am. Organized? Yes. Tidy? Not always. The organization had to happen in order to stay on top of all the cool supplies I have and the small space I keep them in. I will show you more of my studio space, and closer detail of how I organize and sort it all, in future vlog posts since it sounds like something you guys really appreciate.

And to address Shirley Rufener’s comments, I could also show you what’s inside some of those 547 drawers, as well as the best types of plastics to use for organizing clay and how to test it to make sure the clay doesn’t melt the drawers. Plus share with you the reasons why I haven’t got my bin drawers labeled and why that works best for me in this case.

And how adorable was it to hear that several of you watch the tutorials with your small children/grandchildren! Dia your daughter sounds so sweet, helping you get the right tools she saw on the videos and Lynn Vinge, I couldn’t help but laugh when you said your granddaughter couldn’t take a nap at home without “Cindy Lietz”. (My kids thought that was hilarious!) And Teresa D, I love to think that you and your son are watching the videos together.

Gosh, then there is Elizabeth S., Janet and others who would like to see the studios of other members here at the blog. That is a great idea! Go ahead and post photos of your workspaces (big or small, messy or not) at the members photo gallery on Facebook. It would be a great source of inspiration for everyone!

Then there is the ever clever Phaedrakat, who seems to be the only one that picked up on the clue of next weeks tutorial… you have always been such a good reader. Nothing ever sneaks by you.

Since you asked so nicely, I’ve asked Doug, Willow and Fisher to pop into a video or two to say Hi, which they said they will. They are all so cute and sweet that I think you are going to enjoy meeting them as well.

I know that I didn’t respond to each and everyone of you here personally, but please pretend I did. After all, there are 94 amazing comments so far and my comment to you is already getting incredibly long!

Thanks again for being you and being here with us! Keep those comments coming. Doug and I appreciate you more than you’ll ever know!

  96. DawnB, 29 July, 2011

Thanks so much for sharing your studio with us! I have drawer envy! Loved seeing your smiling face. Thanks for everything you do for us.

  97. carolyn, 29 July, 2011

Oh, Cindy – 12X12 sure sounds huge to me these days. I’m still living in my little motorhome and I’d say my work space is about 6X4! Just came from the doc and it sounds like I may be at the coast elevation indefinitely because of the scar tissue left on my lungs from the surgery last November. I’m feeling better but am on oxygen almost all the time. This doesn’t keep me from claying when I have the energy. Some folks saw my home clay station – one end of my kitchen – early on in my time with Cindy. It grew since then, but I haven’t been back there in a year. Some of you also saw my motorhome claying space. It does pretty much take up the entire rig and I’m like so many who have to move stuff if they want to eat or cook! Anyway, Cindy it was great seeing your studio – even though I am jealous – and I loved that dimple that snuck out once in a while. You are so dear to me!

  98. Lupe Meter, 29 July, 2011

Loved your video today…nice to see your face instead of just your voice for a change! WOW…500+ drawers, do you remember what is each drawer? What a nice studio! Everything so organized. One of these days, I hope to be so organized. Thanks for sharing your world with us, Cindy. Would be nice to see your whole family in the future in one of your videos.

  99. Elizabeth K., 29 July, 2011

Hi Cindy, how popular was this Video.Look at the comments,
Wow, I have been wanting to see you in person as you know, so thanks for the lovely video,
I had a smile on my face the whole time, it was lovely.
    You are so organised.
I’d hate you to see where I work , you put me to shame.
    LOL !
I cant make the excuse because it is just a small space, just look at yours, amazing, so well equiped, but then it would be for you.
You are a very sweet lady and much younger than I thought, very pretty, but then that is all the knowledge you have makes you very wise.
Just loved it and hope I can keep that video on to show my students where I get my inspiration from. You have made me feel I must get in and really do something good to my workroom. I think the smaller it is the more you have to have everything in place.Wish I had those 547 drawers, just amazing. I guess we all wish that one.
Will love to see the family when you get around to it.
Seeing other great names in the poly world here was such a buzz. Iris M, Shirley R,love all the comment and loved Elaine Faulks , about her 2am foray. I am on my own , but do have times like that. Very good Elaine
Im always a bit late with my comments, but I will pretend, you saw it too.
    bye for now.
    Love you all
    Elizabeth K.

  100. Linda A, 29 July, 2011

Thanks Cindy – You have a great space and appear to be very organized. Gave me some ideas of what to do with my space! I look forward to your weekly videos and would love to see the area where you make the videos. Thanks for sharing!

  101. DJ, 29 July, 2011

So nice to get a peek at you and your studio Cindy (love your blouse and necklace!). Not only a warm personal touch, but lots of great organizing ideas with all the feedback too. AND it looks like we won’t have to dread 5th Fridays anymore…instead maybe we can look forward to more visits with you! This was such a great idea, can’t wait to see more – I’m really curious about what’s in all those little drawers ;0)

  102. Aims, 29 July, 2011

Without even playing this video Cindy I can see that we have the same storage ‘cabinets’! And is that really surprising since we are both Canadians and doesn’t every Canadian shop at CT?

I’m still waiting for my video to load and I’m really looking forward to it!

  103. Dixie Ann, 29 July, 2011

Cindy, thanks for the tip on security settings. Got to see your studio video and it was nice to see where all your creative resources come from. You certainly have a lot of “stuff” all organized. Wow, I’m impressed and am looking forward to seeing all the new stuff you come up with. I spent all day watching just your videos and am amazed at how much I am learning.
I already have a list of videos I want to purchase from the library. My brain is in overdrive. Dixie Ann

  104. Edie h, 29 July, 2011

Can you tell me where to buy the boxes with the drawers love them!
I’m sure they are good to keep the clay in?
    Can’t wait for more thanks

  105. Elaine Faulks, 29 July, 2011

Hi all you Cindy fans. Yep wasn’t it great to see the “face” instead of just the hands (although you have great hands Cindy). You know what Cindy I think you kicked a few butts, showing us your neat n tidy work space. If ever you need a new job you could go all over the world sorting out storage and organising our “studios”, I’m not sure how you would spare the time but knowing Cindy she could figure it out. (Beam me up Scotty)
I hang my head in shame and really should have my own servant to tidy up after me!!I only really have a blitz when my sister comes to stay.
In return for teaching her new Precious Metal Clay techniques she willingly organises me, cooks great veggie meals tidies up and walks the dog. Trouble is it’s an 8 hour drive for her but we usually get together to do art n craft fairs a few times per year.
You will probably guess by now I am a night owl.Well I can watch Cindy 24/7 and must confess to being a PC addict.

I also have a little imp that hides my tools and messes up my work-space, (but I fool him and sometimes work all through the night so he has to sit and sulk in a dark corner.)
But with one daughter living in OZ and the other living between US and Monaco, I sometimes get phone calls at unearthly hours. Do not mind, as nice to know they still need the “Dragon Lady” for a little advice or a chat when they feel homesick.
Sorry you can go gloss over all this rabbiting to cut to the chase.
On Fridays I sometimes get a chinese or indian take-away. The food safe plastic boxes are great for storing you “work in progress”. Wash well first and even bleach the “curry” ones.
If you put your blended PC, half finished work etc.in them and use two or three if needed for each project My friendly postman always puts strong red rubberbands round my post so I stack and band the different projects. Masking tape for a lable, easy to write on and just stick a new piece on top of old if you change the contents. They stack well, even use them to store my spices, dried herbs etc. Another great storage container is a fishing tackle box but make sure it has the recycle logo with the number 5 in the middle. I store all my finished unbaked canes and with all the little compartments these make great storage boxes. Have only got eight so far but they stack great on my bookcases.

Well too late to go to bed now as have to go to work in a couple of hours. Just been nagged for staying up all night but hey why waste time sleeping when you can play with your clay!! But he who must be obeyed is making me a cup of tea, (got to luv em.) Hope some of this advice is helpful but make sure you look for the number five logo on the stuff you want to store raw clay in. Toodles, gotta go………Bye.

  106. Elizabeth K., 31 July, 2011

    @Elaine Faulks:
Hi Elaine, Wow you sound just like me, even to the 3 daughters living well away from you. Fancy Monaco, wow again. I have 3Ds, with one living in US, 2 here in Oz, one in Queensland, one in Melbourne Victoria, but not near me, so I too get calls at all hours, and I too stay up all hours. nobody to tell me to give in.
I do exactly the same with the take away cartons and the rubber bands, yes my mail even comes with good rubber bands , amazing. you sound like a practical person as I am, you are not a Capricorn are you?. Some times I just hate being a Cap, as one is so practical and down to earth, I wish sometimes to just be able to leave things as they are, and not have to be so regimented, I just have to get in and know how things are done, all the Nitty Gritty of a thing. but as I get older, my tidiness is not as my Capricorn tag says it should be.
Yes Cindy is an inspiration with her tidy work shop, and so I am repeating a Mandrel, if thats the word. “Remember how Tidy Cindy is, and may you even be a little bit like it.” LOL!!
I think at the weekend we are allowed to waffle on a bit here, so have fun.
PMC is great, but as It is a bit excy and another string to the bow, I havent taken it up, altho have been to Demos.
I do a lot of other crafts too, so I guess that is why my stuff is sometimes so messed up . Thats my excuse anyway.
    See you here again.
    Love
    Elizabeth K.

  107. Elaine Faulks, 29 July, 2011

    Message to Marcela.
Both Art Clay and PMC are great products. When designing my silver pieces I usually do a “mock-up” in polymer-clay as it doesn’t dry out like silver clay so you can re-work it and bake it taking your time to get it to look right.

Bearing in mind that when you fire the PMC/Art Clay it will shink by up to 10% so if making rings it has to be carefully measured. It is a challenging medium to work with and expensive to make mistakes with. I teach (informally) as there is a lot to learn. I do not have a kiln (still saving up) but my daughte sent me a ceramic japanese hot-pot that I use when I am firing stuff that has been modelled over cork clay. When I first fired it up in the garden smoke billowed out and I had to rush inside and close all the windows (good job my neighbours love me) If you are just firing flat small pieces you can use a torch, like the chefs use to make creme brulee or if you have a camping gaz stove you can put wire mesh on the burner and fire on that. Because you are working with a naked flame, always take especial care think (health and Safety) There are some excellent books on the art of metal clays and I always feel like “Merlin” when I have finished a piece of pure silver. But hey this site is all about polymer-clay so I suggest you buy a couple of good books or attend a workshop run by an accredited tutor who has taken the three intensive courses to qualify to teach this wonderful material…….Hope this helps a little….Take care **

  108. Lynn Watts, 29 July, 2011

Great studio Cindy. BTW I did not get the color recipes Rose Bud 5/13/11 and soft lilac 5/13/11 and peach rose 5/20/11 and pale sunshine 5/20/11 and terra rose 5/27/11. Can they be resent? As u well know or maybe not my oldest was diag. with breast cancer, had a double mas. etc. then my husband had breast surgery no cancer tho. I have been so busy I have missed getting the recipes and so wish 2 have them. Can u help please? Thanks.

ADDED NOTE BY DOUG: Hi Lynn – All the best to you and your family through the health challenges you described. Unfortunately we are not able to resend missing color recipes. But these recipes do cycle through the newsletter twice so be sure to watch for them on the second go round.

  109. Georgette Robertson, 30 July, 2011

Cindy, thank you for thinking of all of us by sharing your personal work space. It looks really good. I seem to take up so much room when I work on a project that it does my heart really well to see that you can accomplish so much in such a small space. And you must know exactly where everything is. Even with labels, I still have a hard time finding things. You are a good example for those of us that think we need so much more space than we do. Thank you again. You are an inspiration.
    Georgette

  110. Karonkay, 30 July, 2011

Cindy, I know that I need not comment on tidy, small or wonderful drawers as that has all been said above, I just wanted to say thank you for having me into your studio for the nice visit. Very pleasant chat and company for the few minutes of the video. If on occasion you find the odd drawer open in the morning you will know that it was just me having a peek in there in the wee long hours of the sacred and silent night. And thank you for keeping us owls company when we are claying long into the night. We are all obsessed in this claying venture together. Thank you for the joy of creating, we love you. Hugs from around the world!

  111. Karonkay, 30 July, 2011

Cindy, I used to be afraid of the dark, so lonely and silent. Until I learned that night time is when everything is quiet and all the world is sleeping, we put down our troubles and cares and pick them up again when we wake in the morning, night is for peace not fear. I even prefer to drive long distances at night when the roads are clear and everyone is resting. Just thought that I should maybe explain that in my first comment, only when I re-read it did I realize that not everyone would appreciate the sacredness of peaceful silent nights like we have here in the country.

  112. Debra Gibson, 30 July, 2011

Big California Hug To You Cindy !

Thank’s so much for sharing your studio ! That was a treat and your space looks warm and inviting got to say though I love the DRAWERS !!!!!!! My sweet husband bought me a new work bench for my studio and it took me the better part of my Saturday to put it together and beings I’m ADHD and do things backward’s I had a heck of a time putting that thing together but I did it and I’m so proud I finished it myself and it looks great I reorganized my studio and even found my brand new Tim Holts texturing hammer that was given to me by a friend over a year and a half ago I just had to laugh cause I could’nt remember where I had put it ! So now everything is lovely !
Thank’s again your the best !!!!
    Debra :)

  113. Sue Neundorfer, 30 July, 2011

Cindy, So happy to see you face to face. Happy to see how organized you are. I think it must be better to have a smaller space to work in. I have a 15ft. by12 ft. space with a closet and lots of storage space. I find the more I spread out the messier I get. My room is a disaster all of the time. I’ll be interested to see how you organize your drawers. I feel like a hoarder and I can’t seem to get organized. Strange as it sounds I know where things are in all the mess. If I put things away I can’t find them.
I really look forward to every Fri. to see what ‘s come out of your creative mind.Thank you for sharing. Sue

  114. Dorothy Hurkett, 31 July, 2011

I am new to your site and must say it takes a bit of effort to learn all the nooks and crannies….your studio is impressive…where in the world did you find all those little drawers and oh how I would love to see you working in your studio. Also the tool with the round head??where to purchase one.

  115. Rebecca (Becky) Chisenhall, 31 July, 2011

@Dorothy Hurkett: Dorothy, thought I might jump in here to tell you those little drawers can be found at places like Home Depot and Lowe’s, maybe other hardware stores, too, maybe Walmart, not sure. They are commonly used to store hardware items like screws, bolts, etc.

  116. Cindy Lietz, 02 August, 2011

Holy cow what a response!! Thanks everyone. It means a lot to me, to hear from so many of you like this.

And to those who have not felt comfortable about leaving a comment, please don’t be shy. This is a very friendly community. We all can learn so much from each other.

Reading all of your wonderful and creative stories has been very fun! Picturing you building storage solutions with your husbands… and watching videos with your grand-kids…. very delightful! And from so many different countries around the world.

For those of you who have been wondering where I got those little drawers, I got them at a home-hardware store we have here called Canadian Tire. The following link shows what they look like, so that maybe you can find an equivalent in your area).

Mastercraft 60-Drawer Plastic Parts Cabinet: Product #58-1087-2

@carolyn: Oh My Gosh Carolyn it is wonderful to hear from you!! I know you have been having such a difficult time. We really have missed you around here. Hope things improve for you real soon. All of our thoughts and prayers are with you.

@Dorothy Hurkett: Those round head tools are from the Sculpey Style and Detail Tool Set. I got mine form Michaels.

  117. Amy B., 31 July, 2011

    Cindy-
It was so wonderful to see your workspace. I have been trying for a long time now (too long to mention!) to get a space organized for my beading and crafts….but there’s so much to do, I feel like I’m spinning my wheels! Do you or anyone else ever have that problem? LOL!
We have a small house, and the bedrooms are small. I’d always thought I needed a big room to work in, but you’ve shown me (literally!) that I don’t need a big room- just a small room that’s organized.

I just showed my husband this tutorial, and he got as excited as I am to change out my youngest daughter’s old bedroom- the “Mom” in me has been dragging her feet to re-arrange her room and turn it into my craft room; I’ve been doing it a bit at a time, but it’s so hard! She finished high school 2 years ago, and has moved out to CA afterwards; so I guess it’s time. She’s even said it’s ok…. LOL. But I’m still hanging on… :) Some might think that’s silly, but for me it’s purely sentimental.

ANYWAY- I’d better get moving…my husband is in the mood to really help me get this project of creating my “space” started, so I don’t want to waste the moment. Thanks so much for your passion, spirit and inspiration. I hope we can all grow up to be like you. :) Happy creating, Cindy. Keep the flow going!
    Love, Amy B.

Thanks for sharing your workspace with us. You are so organized. That would be my dream. I share a workroom with my husband, so usually end up going into the dining room with my “stuff” to have some elbow room.

This is a fun format for your fifth Friday.

  119. Kristi L, 31 July, 2011

Thanks for showing us around your studio, Cindy! Seeing all those drawers inspired me to go searching for these and i won’t stop until i find them!
    Keep up the good work.

  120. cindy bell, 31 July, 2011

  121. bev ellis, 31 July, 2011

    Enjoyed the tour.

  122. Marsha, 31 July, 2011

It was so nice to see your studio and to see you! I have a wonderful room as my studio space with lots of drawers but have such a hard time becoming and staying organized. I would love to hear more about your organization strategies. Thank you and have a great day!

  123. Elaine Faulks, 31 July, 2011

    Hi Cindy,
Have just been watching the back issues I purchased from you and WOW you have got me hooked on copper wire. My other half amazed me with a huge bundle of filthy plastc coated cables and stripped a few inches to show me the different thicknesses inside. So will have to get my hands dirty and start stripping!!
Went to a new venue today (Sunday) to a community of craft people who meet once a month. Lovely setting down by the river. Got talking and bought some lovely home-made jams and also a beaded amulet necklace from a brilliant lady who does great stuff with the tiny seed beads.
No polymer clay stuff and only 3 jewellery stalls so might join them later in the year as they seem very friendly and all the crafts on show were really beautiful.
We sat by the river after, sipping cold beer and my puppy dog had her first swim.
Most people I spoke to had never heard of polymer clay?? Will have to spread the word about Cindy’s site. It seems that here in UK we are way behind crafters from across the pond.
    To Elizabeth K.
I am a real dummy when it comes to anything to do with computers as my daughter used to do all the tecchhy stuff for me so still learning (very slowly) how to navigate this site. I am a Gemini (two sides of the coin) brilliant at somethings useless at others!
I also have done (and sold) many other crafts but Polymer Clay is by far the most facinating medium I have worked with and Cindy and Doug, together make the best team for learning and showing us (how to)So glad to have joined and discovered all these clayers…………….

  124. Angela K, 01 August, 2011

    Hi Cindy,

These types of videos are great! Thank you for sharing your very tidy space. I am working toward getting my work area so organized.

Thank you for all of your hard work!

  125. Andrea K, 01 August, 2011

Cindy, I enjoyed this video a lot, like I enjoy each of them! … thanks’ for sharing Your workspace with all of us :)
I’m in the middle off moving into a nice loft (it’s an old factory that was remodeled just a few years ago for craftspeople and artists as living and work space). And while I spend my time this days planing how to organize my new little home studio, your video was really fun to watch… thanks’ again :)

  126. Efrat L, 01 August, 2011

    dear cindy

i think you are doing a wonderfull work.

  127. Barbara R, 01 August, 2011

Hi Cindy Thanks for showing what your work area looks like. It is great to see what other work area look like, and get some ideas on what to do with mine. I really do enjoy all your video on polymer clay and all the different styles and designs that can be done with it. The first item I made was beads were white a swirl of brown thru them, and a flat fob same color.

  128. Tantesherry, 01 August, 2011

Thank you all for your prayers and words of comfort,it ment so much. My mama was taken off the ventalator this morning-yay–and I just got a call from the icu nurse, UNC Chapel Hill hospital (finally) has a bed for her– another yay :)

  129. Lenae K, 02 August, 2011

    Hi Cindy,
Thanks for making this video. I have been feeling guilty that I have been using up too much space for doing my craft work. Seeing your video made me realize that one needs space to be creative. I have similar storage boxes and probably should invest in more but limited funds keeps me from doing so. At least I know I am on the right track for storage space. Anyway, thanks again for the video.

  130. Silverleaf, 02 August, 2011

Wow, just realised I never commented on this post! Your studio looks wonderful Cindy, very neat and organised, although it’s very big compared with my tiny little room (8′ x 8.5′, with a good chunk of the room taken up with the bulkhead of the stairs). I love the drawers, but I just don’t have room for something like that.

Down one side of the room I have 3 desks. Above them is shelves for “in progress” work/inks/Perfect Pearls/glitters/magazines/books, rails with hanging cups for pencils/pens/markers/brushes/clay tools/wax crayons, magnetic knife racks that hold my metal tools like pliers and blades and needles, my magnetic colour chip board and hopefully soon a world map so I can “see” where my customers are located. Plus a tall CD/DVD unit that currently houses my “hedgehog” yarn.

The other side of the room has wooden shelving units filled with plastic boxes of clay and all kinds of supplies, plus jewellery in various stages of completion (I tend to work in batches), my oven, packaging supplies, stationery, etc. It’s a full old room, but I’m no way posting pictures of it at the moment because it’s still partly full of rubbish I haven’t gotten round to clearing out yet!

  131. Catalina, 03 August, 2011

@Silverleaf: You should see my studio! 99% done! Not in too bad of shape, cleaning wise. We should Skype again and I’ll give you another tour!

  132. Silverleaf, 07 August, 2011

@Catalina: Cat, that sounds awesome! I’m looking forward to chatting again. :)

  133. Elaine Faulks, 02 August, 2011

Did anyone (as a child) read a book called,
    “The Ship That Flew”
(I first read it when I was about eight)I have re-read it to heaps of children over the years and still get letters from “grown-up” children who remember the magic of sitting listening to a chapter a night! In the book “Peter” the main character buys an old model viking ship that turns out to be magic. He learns how to work the magic that makes the ship grow to full size and has many adventures with it.
When it lands back to earth it shrinks small enough to put back in his pocket.(how cool is that?)

When I think of CINDY working her magic to reduce lumps of PC into tiny canes I think of this book….

Peter travelled all over the world in his magic ship and was also able to go back in time…

I CAN DO THAT on Cindy’s “Magic Site”, going right back in time to when she made her first “Tutes”. I can read messages from all over the world and see beautiful works of art without getting out of my chair.(How lucky am I)

Now if only I knew the magic words to shrink all my craft supplies, tools and clay, small enough to put in my cosmetic case you could re-name me Harriet Potter, but I have mislaid my book of spells so must have a mass tidy up in case I come across it!!!

So keep working your MAGIC Cindy (and Doug) I am completely under your spell………..

PS. I hope only good things come out when we open Pandora’s Box****************

  134. Kim H, 02 August, 2011

I really enjoyed the video! It was nice to see you as a person, not just a pair of hands. Please continue to give us a glimpse of your creative space as it is an inspiration to get organized! I did expect you to grab the camera and show off your hubby as he is part of the team as well! Looking forward to seeing more videos of you and your space!

  135. Elaine Faulks, 02 August, 2011

    Hi Cindy,

Well I’ve been really naughty and buying a load of tools online, well you’ve just gotta have’em!! Just a shame that the alphabet disc thinggy is a little bit too pricey here in UK. Will have to stay with my rubber stamp ones but will put it on my Christmas wish list
Wish we had a Hobby Lobby or Micheals, as I am nowhere near anything like that and our little local art n Craft shop has closed down, boo hoo sob!
I loved all the back issues and will have to complete the set some time soon. I don’t do Facebook, Twitter, or anything similar,(Still learning all this stuff, but will get there one day) Might even get to learn how to use my camera as have constructed a light box (thanks for info) and all the other non-polymer clay stuff……………

    Message to Elizabeth K……

My young brother and his family live in Melbourne, he hates computers so I still get lovely letters from him. I only have TWO daughters but the one who was living in US is in the middle of moving. They have bought an old house in South of France can’t wait to get the pictures with her emails. She has been packing up the house in US so has been back and forth and staying in Monaco till sorted.
I just hope Cindy will not get fed up with me taking over but I just love reading all you comments and YES we sound very similar but do not worry about being too capable it IS a Capricorn trait. My favourite astrologer says of your sign, that Mercury is rewinding so you might have to alter your plans so check details carefully.xx

Thanks again Cindy, I promise I am now going so Toodles x

  136. Elizabeth K., 02 August, 2011

    @Elaine Faulks:
Hi again Elaine, thanks for answering. Must be nice to get mail instead of just email, at least that keeps the Postman in a job.
That sounds wonderful, South of France and it will be closer I’m sure so nice to loók forward to.I will have to read up on what Mercury says, mm, rewinding ,wonder what that means. I hope something good.
Mustnt take up too much space here so bye for now.
love to all Elizabeth K. XXX

Hi Cindy thanks for showing a portion of your studio.

  138. Janice W, 03 August, 2011

Cindy, I loved this video. We are making a shop in the basement and you have given me lots of ideas to pass on to the rest of my family. We have a 30’x20′ area. I did not know the size until today after your viedo. I am so excited now. You are awesome. Now, we have get it all together.
Thank you for your tour and wonderful ideas. JC

  139. Cindy Lietz, 03 August, 2011

Incredible! There are 137 comments in this thread now. Who knew just a tiny peek into my humble studio would stir so much activity. How fun! Thank you all for being such great friends for me and each other. It would be hard to feel bored or lonely when there are people like you!

Elaine your stories are fantastic! I love the idea of a ship that will shrink to fit in your pocket. That reminds me… when I was a kid, I had an imaginary friend named Judy. I kept her inside my pocket and would bring her out to sit on my hand to chat with me. Whenever someone would give me too big of a hug, I would get upset that they were squishing Judy. I am sure Judy would have loved to have a ship in there with her to go traveling with! :-)

Does anyone remember the comic books about ‘Sniffles’ – Pouf-pouf-pickles-make me just as small as sniffles. I loved it. Sniffles was so tiny that a pencil made a huge bridge for her from one leaf to another. A normal little girl found Sniffles one day and used the above incantation and did become as small as sniffles for a time. I’d give just about anything to get a copy of one of those comic books. I used to close my eyes and pretend that I became as small as sniffles. Gosh, if I became as small as sniffles now, my clay room would seem even bigger than Cindy’s!

  141. Karen M, 05 August, 2011

Loved the video, it made me realise you do need lots of drawers to be organised I thought I was being greedy wanting more lol, I only have a few. Thinks I shall be going shopping! I have a bug bear though its all those little bits you have just 1 of that you end up chucking in a drawer with 100 other individual items any tips would be appreciated thanks

  142. Tina A, 06 August, 2011

Wow that was a great look at your area, mine is a tad bigger 12 x 20, my hubby said I have co -oped a 3rd of the house at this point ;-)
I am getting ready to put up a new blog and will be showing up my studios, that is why I so much love to see everyone else ! If you are interested in the sneak peak, click on my name and it will take you to my flickr page.

WOW now that is great use of wall space ! I look forward to coming back and reading all the comments and seeing your filming studio.

Every week, I look so forward to what you will teach me ! You and Doug are the best !
    Take care,
    Tina in Houston Texas

  143. Tonya, 07 August, 2011

My husband and I found a set of 8 of those little drawer boxes at an auction dirt cheap! They are sturdy metal exterior with the plastic drawers, clean and like new. What luck! We will most likely split them up, 4 for him and 4 for me. Yay!

  144. Bonnie B, 07 August, 2011

@Tina in Houston….I will be coming to Houston on the 28th to October and will be there for about 3-4 days. I will be in sessions most of the time…..Saturday evening, and Sunday morning and early afternoon. I am coming to hear Jospeh Prince teach at Joel Olsteen’s Church. I would love to make arrangements to meet sometime saturday during the day or sunday in the late afternoon to meet for coffee or something. If possible advise when, where, if not; it would have been lovely. I love meeting PC people especially folks I meet through Cindy….she is the greatest!!!!! Blessings, BonniB

  145. Guylaine Laflamme, 12 August, 2011

It took me a while before I could watch your video. I am very happy that I did, it as inspired me on ways to organise my craft room and to restart to do it again. I had put it asside for a while because I was trying to find a way to bring extra income which is not working to well at the moment. It also made me realise that you can’t put asside something you are passionate about for something that is not you. You get lost in that, you feel like part of you is missing. Keep up the good work!

  146. Neha Malla, 13 August, 2011

    Great video, Cindy!!

You are a very pretty woman and very pleasant. Your voice is beautiful almost “singing”. The video was extremely helpful. My stuff seem to spread horizontally rather than vertically and takes over my family space. I would like to know where you buy specific drawers. That would be very helpful and how they attach to the wall. Thank you!!

  147. Cindy Lietz, 15 August, 2011

Cool! It looks like several of you got inspired to organize your work spaces. Love to see some of your craft rooms/studios/kitchen workspaces if you’d like to share photos on our facebook page. It would be fun to see where you all create!

@Guylaine Laflamme: I love your comments Guylaine! You are so right about the importance of being your authentic self in order to be successful. In this world of copy cats, the only way to truly stand out and be recognized as something special, is to be your one-of-a-kind self. There is only one made like you… so you might as well be the best YOU that you can be! :)

@Neha Malla: Thank you for saying that! How sweet. I got my bins at Canadian Tire here in Canada.

Mastercraft 60-Drawer Plastic Parts Cabinet: Product #58-1087-2

You should be able to find something similar in your area.

On the back of my bins are some holes so that you can secure them to the wall. Doug did this for me using gyproc anchor screws, so there is no worry of them falling down and spilling or hurting someone. Boy with 500 drawers you sure wouldn’t want that to happen!

  148. Nafsika K, 17 August, 2011

WELL DONE!!! ITS AN EXCELENT PLACE TO WORK POLYMER CLAY…

  149. Natalie, 21 August, 2011

    Hi Cindy
Loved seeing your work space. My husband and I have a very large family room..too long so our coach divides off a about a 6 by 12 foot area for my work…I inherited his our wood work bench that has 6 large drawers and a large cut out on the left. On top I have my pasta machine on the left and on the right I have my toaster oven that I got from freecyle. I took your suggestion an purchased serveral fishing tackle boxes for my clay…they are in one draw. The other drawers a full of supplies . Most important ones in the top draws..Since this room is all windows…I don’t have the wall space like you do but I make due with what I have. I got my stool when my hubby decided he did not need it in his wood working shop any more. He has been great with giving me things that he has out grown.
What made things even better. he gave me his old lap top that has to be plugged in all the time) battery charge doesn’t hold.. but its great for watching your videos while I work….Working with polymer clay keeps my mind of my cancer….
Hope I can send you a picture of my work space soon….
    Natale aka safti

  150. Tina A, 22 August, 2011

@Bonnie B — hope this works… Bonnie, click on my name and you will get my flickr page, send me your email address and we will see what we can work out !

left info on your flicker….hope you got it….let me know….looking forward to “chatting” Blessings, BonnieB

    Great video, Cindy!!

You are a pretty woman and very nice to see you for “real”!
Thank you for making that effort.
It feels as I know you now!

@ Marcela- I’ve worked with precious metal clay and I use Art Clay. If you’d like more information about it check this site. It’s Canadian but you can take a look: artclaycanada.com/

  154. Maria Kelley, 04 September, 2011

Cindy… I love your organizational skills! Personally if I am not organized, I just can’t seem to work well. However, when I am working on something my worktop is an organized disaster. I’ve read through all the comments and didn’t see anyone pick up on something I saw in your studio. While the drawers were the main focal part, I also noticed what was ON TOP of those drawers. What caught my eye was the way you have your craft paint stored. I have searched for quite some time for a way to keep my paints stored and yet semi-out of the way. I’ve narrowed my paints down to about 100 now and would love to know where I might purchase something like what you have. Web searches haven’t turned up anything like yours, and the few things I have found are way too expensive for my pocketbook. Do your paint containers also attach to the wall? I read the type of screws Doug used to attach your claying drawers but are they also into studs? If I can locate the paint holders like yours, do you feel they definitely need to be into studs because of the weight – which come to think of it, is at least as heavy as our clay. Even though I don’t make very many jewelry items from the clay, I use it to make sculptures and even dollhouse items. I have already learned some techniques from you that I plan on incorporating into these. The faux Raku really seems to be something that is going to show up quite often in some of my future sculpts. When I get one done, I will send you a picture if you would like. Thank you, Cindy, for bringing such joy into so many of our lives.

  155. Cindy Lietz, 13 September, 2011

Those paint storage racks I bought years ago from a supplier that is no longer in business. This is sad since I love them and I could use a few more myself. They are made with MDF (medium density fiberboard) and wouldn’t be too hard to make for a woodworker. I’ll keep an eye out and let you know if I ever see anything like them again.

I asked Doug about the anchor screws and he said, yes whenever you are mounting any racks to the wall that must support weight, always be sure to securely attach them to a few studs. Better safe than sorry.

    Thanks for your comment!

  156. Dia H, 05 September, 2011

    Hi, Cindy.
I love the way you organize your studio and your work..wonderful, give me some inspirations to more organize my stuff.
I just joined 2-3 months ago, from I had no idea what’s polymer clay until now I am making some jewelry from it, I will put some pictures on your facebook later, I still need to take some pictures and create facebook.

Sometime I couldn’t believe that I did make bead and jewelry from Polymer clay. I used to deal with International logistics and shipment Documentation, but since I stay home Mom, I like doing crafting which I never did in the past..I don’t know what is wrong with me, this idea was just popped up in my head. My Husband and My friends like what I made . Some of my friends bought them, heyyyyy I just started yesterday and I already sold them ( they like my poppy bracelet, pandora bead, and tulip necklace that I made). I have been searching polymer clay tutorial, but I always come back to your website, I didn’t find other tutorial like yours from the topic, and cost . I love the way you explain, easy way to follow especially for beginner and all your ideas, you are such a good teacher.

We just moved in small city called Pooler USA due to my hubby’s job, and here… it is not easy to find Jewelry class or workshop..I can say almost nothing… Sometime I miss living in the big city that I can get most what I need. However, I am very happy that I finally find your tutorial. I don’t need to drive and spend for gasoline to go to the class, just stay home with my pijama and play your video over and over again..My husband familiar with your greeting voice with the ” Hi Guys…. then he answered back “Bye guys..lol

I am addicted to play around with polymer clay..see what did you do to me??? :), and I will seriously do polymer clay bead making as my part time job. Thanks for everything..Cindy.

I am interested in learning :
    1. Making Figurine ( wedding topper, and figurine charm for kid’s jewelry).
    2. Tropical Flower’s caning and sculpting.
    3. Autumn leaves cane and Sculpting.
    4. Faux Twigs ( wood logs )
    5. Making bangle bracelet from polymer clay.

    Thank you.

  157. Susan Puckett, 12 November, 2011

Great info Cindy. Enjoyed how compact you are. Looking forward to more.

  158. Lynn Watts, 16 November, 2011

Thanks 4 letting us c ur studio and all the wonderful ways u have organized all ur supplies. I wish I could find what u have 2 hold ur clay canes etc. It also is a pleasure 2 c u and ur other half. All ur work is greatly appreciated by all. All of Doug’s photos r so colorful and the way u present the colors in clay r just wonderful. Since I have a hard time n mixing colors, ur recipes r an inspiration 2 me. To look @ nature in all it’s beauty and capture it on film, and interpret the colors 4 others 2 use in their designs has amazed me @ ur ability 2 produce what all u and ur husband do. Keep up the great work. May u and ur’s be in God’s grace.

  159. Maria Kelley, 17 November, 2011

Lynn… The cabinets like Cindy uses for her clay and canes are available through Amazon.com. They run around $35 to $40 as I recall… but truly worth it. I only have one and have already filled it just like Cindy’s with all the new clay. This is sooo much better than having it in a drawer. I also have other cabinets that are similar that hold gemstones and beads. Those I got at Lowes (a hardware store in the states) They have larger drawers at the bottom than the above cabinet but would still work nicely for clay. Good luck on finding what you need.

  160. Lynn Watts, 17 November, 2011

Thanks Maria 4 the info. What r they called? Cabinet drawers or what? I will go 2 Amazon and c what I can find. Oh Lowe’s is another idea, thanks so much. It is a pleasure 2 b answered so quickly and offered help 2 a problem. U were a BIG help! Happy claying 2 each and everyone in this fine community that has bloomed here. Such nice and helpful people 4 every problem or ideas that may occur. We all need alittle help every now and then.

  161. Maria Kelley, 18 November, 2011

Lynn… on Amazon they are called Stack-On Stack-On DS60 Storage Cabinets. $39,99 They come from a company called Northern Tool & Equipment. The main reason I went with this particular cabinet was because Cindy said the plastic drawers were polymer clay safe…. and they truly are. I also wanted to be a copy-cat with dreams of being as organized as Cindy! LOL

  162. Edie, 18 November, 2011

All reviews say the drawers are not clear. If any one has order theses can you let’s us know how they were? Thanks for any help. Edie

  163. Maria Kelley, 18 November, 2011

Edie… The Stack-On DS 60 Storage Cabinet I got from Amazon had clear drawers. I had also read some complaints about not having clear drawers. I just ordered my cabinet in August so maybe the company received enough complaints about opaque drawers that they changed back to clear…. not sure. Also the ones I have gotten at Lowe’s all have clear drawers. There may be a phone number or email address that you can write to Northern Tool and Equipment and ask them to confirm the clear drawers for you. Good Luck.

  164. Edie, 18 November, 2011

    hi Maria
thanks so much. Did you buy from Northern or amazon? There is quite a price difference of double?

  165. Maria Kelley, 18 November, 2011

Edie…. I bought through Amazon but they used Northern as their dealer. And yes I paid double of what the other one cost. I paid $39.99. I don’t remember for sure but I must have done that because there were no complaints about it. Maybe I was the only one who was willing to pay that much, who knows, LOL. You might try looking at Lowe’s or Home Depot, maybe even Walmart if you are in the states. Cindy said she got hers at an automotive supply place in Canada.

  166. Maria Kelley, 18 November, 2011

Edie… I just looked up how much I paid and it was $26.99 not $39.99 but it still says it came from Northern. That’s quite a price increase since June.

  167. Edie, 18 November, 2011

Hi Maria , I went ahead and got through amazon thru stack on the company that makes them. I got them for 19.77 with free shipping. so you didn’t pay but 6.00 more unless you had to pay shipping. I am hoping they will be the same as you got clear drawers. But amazon is good about returning if it is not what they say. My husband says that northern is higher in price on most everything. So keep your fingers crossed I will post and let every one know if they were clear drawers. Thanks for your help! Edie

  168. Patricia Rasmuson, 26 March, 2012

    Hi Cindy,

Awesome! I have been wondering what your work space looked like. So much in such a small amount of space. Now I know things I can do to make mine easier to work in. Thanks!

    Patricia

  169. Trudy Schwartz-Burrill, 26 July, 2012

    CINDY,
Yea! A totally organized everything has it’s place person. I’m not alone.
I imagine you don’t have to worry about earthquakes with all that above your head?!?

Totally not surprised that you know what’s in all your drawers. My kids used to marvel at what they called “the craft store!” In my studio they seemed to always find supplies they needed for school projects but I know what blew them away most is that I could be on a trip they would call and ask ” mom where can I find blah blah blah, for my school project?” When I could tell them where anything was that was amazing to them. The funny thing to me was that I did actually know where things were.

I have moved so many times and each move brings me a new configuration to decorate. Being an interior designer by trade this offers great fun. I love organizing and reorganizing my studios. I have had favorites. The biggest change in my moves was to seperate my office and studio. This made me much more productive and less distracted.

My next biggest change came when becoming an empty nester. Now I don’t need such large houses! So my hubby, a master RC model builder, often building the plane’s, helicopters and water vessels he designs and builds radar and various types of electronic systems for (those he designs in his day job) he has also has a large studio. That is where we house our shared tools. Its our dirty space so to speak. Drill press, wood turner, torches, hammers, saws for metal clays and glass working is all in that space.

The camera area is the most steril, in a corner in my office.

Until I was able to seperate my areas to different rooms my production ability really expanded by leaps and bounds. I am easily distracted so this works best for me. Regardless I still end up with about of a 8 by 8 inch area to work in so much stuff comes out its an entire process cleaning up for the day. I don’t make the mistake of not organizing at the end of every session in any area. That was a chore but became a great habit. With that many things going more than a day without putting it all away would be the end of all the work I do putting everything it the best place possible.

I should add being a Gemini also means these areas can be one way when everyone leaves me to the house and my work and they all come home to an entirely new organization. And I still know where everything is! Dyslexia seems to vanish in the face of my passions in life. For me anyway.
Loved seeing your studio, Cindy. Everything sounds awesome and congrats on your anniversary. (BELATED!)
    fondly, Trudy
