No, that isn’t a can of salmon in this month’s inspiration photo for the Vol-059 B-color palette and recipe cards. It is actually a decorated garbage can that we found on the streets of Astoria Oregon last summer during our 1st PcT Roadtrip!
In fact these Salmon Tin Bins were all over the place… especially downtown, close to where the Astoria Sunday Market happens.
Situated at the mouth of the Columbia River, Astoria had a booming fish cannery that operated for many years. Today, the site is home to an amazing hotel. Here is a link to some historical pictures posted at Google Images.
You can see the Cannery’s influence all over the place… not only in the trash cans, but also in the names of the restaurants, pubs and stores.
So I thought since the Vol-059 A-series Sunday Market Palette also had a tie-in to Astoria… that it would be perfect timing to do some color recipes inspired by the cannery themed garbage cans for this months Vol-059-B series color palette.

[wp_ad_camp_1]…Pacific Ocean is the darker soft blue that is used in the lettering on this giant salmon can. High Seas is the lighter blue used in the background of the label and reminiscent of the turbulent waters of the high seas where the Salmon were caught. Cannery is the rich dark red of the word Salmon on the tin (and also the color that the original cannery building was painted). And, Chinook is the greenish silver gray of the skin of the Chinook Salmon on the can label. Its also a color that you would find on live Chinook salmon swimming around in the Pacific Ocean. I know this personally… having worked as a deckhand on my father’s fishing boat as a teen. Bet you didn’t know that about me!

Beauty, beauty everywhere, in each color that you have created with love. How awesome is that? There aren’t “thanks” enough, Cindy for all the effort, though it be willing, you put into this clay art and its accessories. Mondays are wonderful to see what is coming, Thursday is a pleasant tease and Fridays are the utmost. Always looking forward to what is coming next and the love shared within our clay family. The Chinook can live for up to nine years

Alevin – Fry – Parr and Smolt
Swimming most of his life.
Then he prepares to enter the ocean
To a life on the high seas
For thousands of miles he will travel
And many things will he see
He grows and grows as the years go by
Then one day gets the urge
To turn around and head for home
Back to his spawning ground.
He will dodge the nets and fishing lines
Leap over the rocks alone
Swimming swimming for all he is worth
To reach that place called home.
So our CINDY has taken your colours
And those of the seas that sway
You will ever be immortalised
In colourful Polymer Clay.

Elaine, you should publish a book of poems. Yours are always so wonderful! I love this new color palette and am so excited to see what Cindy has up her sleeve for us in April.
I finally mastered the translucent labordorite so thanks to everyone for all their tips, it turned out perfect! Cindy, you were right, rolling the clay only as much as needed was the key. I used Pardo this time, had very few air bubbles and even baked it upside down so if there were any they would float to the bottom. (that was Jocelyn’s tip, thanks doll).

So cool you mastered the trans. labordorite and picking up tips from other members is so helpful Jocelyn’s such a doll. I think I must get my hands on some Pardo as it seems such a different medium. Glad you liked my scribbles. Busy writing short story at moment to calm down my buzzing brain that is cluttered with words, just got to get them in the right order LOL :-) I didn’t know things could “float” to the bottom, conjures up a brilliant image in my brain, which is on overdrive……cheers xx………
Elaine, I knew that float statement would garner a laugh but the air is actually floating Up to the bottom of the pendant and it really does work! I am going to post a before and after picture when I get it finished. What a difference! So girl, just keep on writing we all love it so much. Cheers!
I just wanted to say, that anyone with a Michael’s craft store around them, they have their polymer clay Sculptey III and Premo on sale for 87 cents, starting this sunday. I couldn’t believe it, and went to the store and they said yes, it will be 87 cents starting sunday to next week. Now’s the perfect time, to grab a ton of clays for a cheap price.
Also I LOVE these colors for this month! I plan on making all of them at some point, once school gets out and I can start making the pandora/troll beads from the video that you have. :)
