How To Make Sculpey and Fimo Clay Look Like Real Wooden Beads, Boards or Even Dollhouse Furniture:

Natural looking jewelry made of wood, stone and shell are quite popular right now in the fashion magazines. Did you know you can quite easily imitate the look of wood using polymer clay?

One way of imitating wood is to layer several shades of browns, creams, grays and pearls, depending on the species of wood you want to create. Then compress the layers into a thin sheet. If you cut, stack and re-roll this block a few times you will be able create thin stripes in the clay that mimic the grain of the wood.

Once you have reached the desired fineness of the grain you can roll this sheet into a jelly roll cane from the side so that the stripes go the length of the cane and the spiral is at the ends. Much like a real log.

If you now cut this 'log' into 'boards' and lay them side by side you will have a sheet of wood, which you can cut into pendants, wrap around beads or whatever you like.

With some creativity you can use the end slices of the log to create knots in your wood pieces. You can even add 'nails' to the 'boards' for a more realistic look, like in the photo above.
